More arrests from West Mifflin protest

A protest in West Mifflin on Sunday has yielded more arrests.

Six people were initially arrested after a confrontation broke out at a protest near Kennywood Park. That number is up to 13, according to TribLive news partner WTAE.

Friends and family of Terrel “TJ” Byars Jr. were walking from the Duquesne Police Department on South Second Street to the Speedway gas station at 4315 Kennywood Blvd., to honor Byars, a 13-year-old who died after he was hit by a car Dec. 27 in front of Speedway.

According to criminal complaints, West Mifflin police were called to assist Duquesne police on Route 837 for a crowd of 50-plus people walking down the middle of the road, blocking traffic and refusing to move.

West Mifflin Police Chief Gregory McCulloch said police used pepper spray when some of the participants became aggressive.

“We don’t get all of the social media content at once. We’re out searching for it. And we’re reviewing body cameras. The officers and the alleged harmed individuals, for lack of a better word, all deserve fair treatment,” West Mifflin Mayor Chris Kelly said.
