Penn State is on track to win its fifth straight NCAA wrestling title, sending eight wrestlers into Friday’s championship quarterfinals.
The Nittany Lions went 10-0 in the first round Thursday before Braeden Davis (141) and Cole Mirasola (285) were bounced in the second round.
Marcus Blaze (133), Shayne Van Ness (149), PJ Duke (157), Mitchell Mesenbrink (165), Levi Haynes (174) and Waynesburg grad Rocco Welsh (184) all picked up a pair of wins with bonus points en route to the quarterfinals. Luke Lilledahl (125) also advanced.
Two Pitt wrestlers, Mt. Pleasant grad Dayton Pitzer (285) and Mt. Lebanon grad Mac Stout (197), won first-round matches before falling to seeded opponents in the second round.
West Allegheny grad Ty Watters (157) of West Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins. Teammate Rune Lawrence (197) of Frazier won his first match and lost his second.
No Westmoreland County wrestlers advanced to the second round.
