A fiery overnight car crash in Sewickley Township ended with “multiple fatalities,” according to Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman.
Ackerman said he could not confirm the number of fatalities, and his office was still working to identify those killed.
The crash involved a single vehicle that had crashed into a tree, which was followed by a “very intense” fire, he said.
Westmoreland County 911 dispatchers said the crash took place around 3:30 a.m. Saturday on Creek Road in Sewickley Township. The dispatcher said there were no transports from the scene.
The Yough School District said in a statement it was aware of the crash and was canceling school-sponsored weekend events.
The district said in a statement it had limited details on the incident in Saturday’s early hours and was awaiting confirmation from “appropriate authorities.”
The statement did not say whether the crash involved district students.
“As we receive confirmed information, we will provide updates and share next steps to best support our students, staff, and school community,” the statement said.
“We understand that news like this is difficult to process and ask that you please refrain from speculation or sharing unverified details, including on social media,” the statement said.
“Please keep all those involved in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank our first responders and agencies for their efforts and diligence, as they continue to investigate.”
Yough School District serves West Newton, Herminie, Smithton, Sutersville, Madison and Arona boroughs as well as Sewickley and South Huntingdon townships.
