A fiery overnight car crash in Sewickley Township claimed the lives of four people, according to the state police.
Westmoreland County Coroner John Ackerman said his office was working to identify those who died.
The crash involved a single vehicle that crashed into a tree, which was followed by a “very intense” fire, he said.
The crash took place about 3:30 a.m. Saturday in Sewickley Township. Various officials called the road by different names: Derr Road or Creek Road. Ackerman said the crash scene is about 0.4 mile west of Stone Lane.
A Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher said there were no medical transports from the scene.
The coroner’s office said in a release that a passing motorist reported the crash and fire.
The coroner’s office reported that the cause and manner of the deaths are pending autopsies, toxicology results and further investigation.
In a brief social media post late Saturday afternoon, state police said updates won’t be expected until early next week.
They asked anyone with information about the crash to call them at 724-832-3288.
The Yough School District said in a statement it was aware of the crash and was canceling school-sponsored weekend events.
The district said it had limited details on the incident and was awaiting confirmation from “appropriate authorities.”
The statement did not say whether the crash involved district students.
“As we receive confirmed information, we will provide updates and share next steps to best support our students, staff, and school community,” the statement said.
The statement continued: “We understand that news like this is difficult to process and ask that you please refrain from speculation or sharing unverified details, including on social media.”
“Please keep all those involved in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. We also want to thank our first responders and agencies for their efforts and diligence, as they continue to investigate.”
