The Pittsburgh Pirates made a series of roster moves Sunday morning ahead of their spring training game vs. the Boston Red Sox, optioning catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores and right-hander Cam Sanders to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Righties Chris Devenski and Carson Fulmer, left-hander Joe La Sorsa and infielder Alika Williams were reassigned to minor-league camp.
Following the transactions, the Pirates have 28 players remaining in major-league camp.
Flores, 25, was the primary return piece the Pirates received from the New York Yankees last summer in exchange for hometown closer David Bednar.
Last September, he made his MLB debut with the Pirates, flashing some power while hitting .200. But this spring, Flores struggled at the plate over 14 Grapefruit League contests, batting only .080, with two hits and 10 strikeouts in 25 at-bats.
Defensively, Flores split time at catcher and first base, two positions where the Pirates currently have a surplus of personnel.
The 29-year-old Sanders also made his MLB debut for the Pirates last season, posting an 8.10 ERA over six relief appearances.
This spring, Sanders was 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA in eight games (one start), recording 10 strikeouts with a walk through 7 2/3 innings.
Devenski, a 35-year-old veteran of 316 MLB games, was signed to a minor-league contract in January, having spent last season with the New York Mets before being designated for assignment in September.
He was 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA this spring.
Fulmer, 32, inked a minor-league deal in February seeking a bullpen role with the Pirates after a three-year stint with the Los Angeles Angels came to an end last season, partially due to an elbow injury.
Fulmer, who also appeared with the Pirates last spring, made only two appearances, pitching four scoreless innings.
La Sorsa, who pitched for Italy in the World Baseball Classic, was a non-roster invitee to spring training. The 27-year-old pitched three times for the Pirates in spring training, logging three innings.
Williams’ quest to crack the Pirates’ Opening Day roster came to an end. The 27-year-old appeared in 83 games from 2023-24 with the Pirates, batting .202, but spent the entirety of the 2025 campaign at Triple-A.
Released by the Indians in January, he received a non-roster invite to spring training, where he hit .258 in 19 games, with a home run and seven RBIs.
