It was quite a week for the Penn-Trafford hockey program.

The Warriors began the week by winning their first PIHL Class 2A Pens Cup title, defeating rival Hempfield, 4-3.

They ended the week by stunning returning state champion and Flyers Cup champion North Penn, 3-1.

“It has been a crazy week,” Penn-Trafford coach Brian Zagorac said Sunday. “I finally get a chance to sit on my couch and relax.

“It was a special week. We got a great sendoff on Friday and got to spend quality time with the players at our team dinner and stay at the hotel.”

The team got a surprise sendoff from the student body and band drumline, which lined the road down to the bus. They got a police escort to the turnpike.

“After the amazing win, the return home was even more special,” Zagorac said. “We got escorted back to the school with police cars and fire trucks from the community. It shows how much this community cares.”

Penn-Trafford was the underdog in the Pens Cup and the championship game. But the Warriors found a way to shine. They never trailed in the playoffs and set the tone with their play.

As for the state title game, Penn-Trafford got another stellar performance from goaltender Tyler Funk, who made 32 saves.

“Tyler frustrated North Penn’s players,” Zagorac said. “He was so steady. Then we scored a crazy goal and started to play Penn-Trafford hockey. Scoring first was huge.”

Zach Grkman dumped the puck in on goal from the red line in the first period. North Penn’s goalie made an aggressive move forward, and the puck took a couple crazy bounces and hopped over his shoulder.

“I did not see it go in,” Zagorac said. “I was talking to a player when I head a roar and saw us celebrating.

“It showed the North Penn players that we came to play. We started to tilt the ice.”

The score remained 1-0 until, with 9:09 left, Brock Bienemann found a loose puck among bodies in the goal crease. He shoved the puck into the net for a 2-0 lead.

“Brock has a nose for the puck,” Zagorac said. “North Penn players thought it was covered, but Brock kept battling.”

North Penn did not quit. It scored with 1:01 left while playing six-on-five.

But Funk stopped a tying goal attempt, and Ben Zierski ended it with an empty-net goal with 6 seconds left.

“The more we played in the playoffs, the more confident we got,” Zagorac said. “We just kept fighting.

“Tyler told reporters it was just another game. The bigger the game, the better he plays.”

The Pens Cup teams made it a clean sweep. Quaker Valley won in Class A, and Seneca Valley grabbed the Class 3A title.

“The PIHL was a battle this year,” Zagorac said. “Every game was a battle, and it prepared us for the playoffs.”
