Before Saturday, the Penguins Cup champions had not fared well recently against the winners of the Flyers Cup in the annual Pennsylvania Cup championship games.
Between 2021-25, the Penguins Cup champs were a combined 5-10 against the winners from the east, going 1-2 in the three state title games in each of the last five years.
How one-sided had these championships become?
The last time the Penguins Cup winners won more than one Pennsylvania Cup was 13 years ago when North Allegheny and Latrobe were state winners in 2013.
The last sweep by the west was in 2011 when Upper St. Clair, Bishop Canevin and Mars won all three state title games.
That all changed Saturday in West Chester when Seneca Valley, Penn-Trafford and Quaker Valley brought home state gold from the eastern part of the state, days after hoisting this year’s Penguins Cup in the PIHL playoffs.
