WTAE investigative reporter Paul Van Osdol will retire from Channel 4 after 26 years with the station. His last day at WTAE will be Wednesday.
Van Osdol joined Channel 4 in 1999 and his coverage included an investigation into fire response times, which earned a George Foster Peabody Award in 2015, and a report on concussions and children, which earned a regional Edward R. Murrow Award in 2018.
Van Osdol, who’s about to turn 65, said he began thinking about retiring a year ago and made the final decision in recent months.
“I’ve been a reporter for 43 years and it felt like a good time to move on and enjoy the rest of my life, try some new things. What exactly, I’m not sure,” Van Osdol explained. “My parents both died young — 64 and 67 — and that’s been part of my thought process. I will miss the excitement of breaking a story and, as the saying goes, afflicting the comfortable and comforting the afflicted. Most of all, I will miss my colleagues and friends in the newsroom.”
Van Osdol said he has no concrete plans for life post-WTAE, but said, “I’m hoping to find a way to use my research and writing skills for a good cause.”

After filming an entire season of “The Bachelorette” that was due to premiere this week, ABC pulled the show from its lineup late last week after the release of a 2023 video of this season’s “Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” star, Taylor Frankie Paul, throwing barstools in a past domestic violence incident with a child present. The video surfaced amid new domestic violence allegations against Paul.
