Lawyers for a Jeannette woman and her daughter, accused of stealing a $4 million estate from the former head of Greensburg Beverage, told a Westmoreland County judge Thursday the pair plans to liquidate assets to facilitate a plea deal.
Lisa Anne Valesky, 52, of Jeannette, and Angela Lynne Valesky, 28, of Murrysville, were charged last year with theft, conspiracy and other related counts in connection to allegations they concocted a scheme to steal a relative’s inheritance. Prosecutors contend the women posed as another heir who was the primary beneficiary of the estate left by Lisa Valesky’s mother, Bette Iannuzzo, the former chief executive officer of Greensburg Beverage who died in 2017.
Authorities say the Valeskys stole $4.4 million and used those funds to buy homes and cars. Both women have been in jail since their arrest last year in lieu of $1 million bond.
Following a court hearing on Thursday, Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Stewart II scheduled guilty pleas for both women for April 7.
Brian Aston, lawyer for Angela Valesky, confirmed during a court hearing Thursday that his client plans to plead guilty but that no deal with prosecutors has been finalized. He suggested the case’s potential resolution will include both mother and daughter selling off homes and liquidating other assets to help pay restitution of the stolen funds.
“We need to get them out of jail in order to do that,” Aston said. “We’re all guessing about their value, but we need to get them ready for the spring period.”
William Difenderfer, defense attorney for Lisa Valesky, said the value of his client’s assets available to pay restitution has yet to be determined.
“We are not changing our approach to this. We want to resolve it,” Difenderfer said.
Assistant District Attorney Jim Lazar said the prosecution will consider a plea deal once the Valeskys’ ability to repay the stolen funds is clarified. He said he opposes any effort to modify the women’s bonds without a clear restitution plan.
“There’s no reason to trust these two women,” Lazar said.
