Multiple Indiana Township police officers and West Deer EMS personnel recently were commended for their efforts in saving a resident’s life earlier this year.

First responders were dispatched shortly before noon on Jan. 18 to a home along Chatham Lane for a person having a cardiac arrest.

EMS Executive Director Bill Humes said everyone, including the patient’s family members, reacted quickly.

“The patient’s family immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation, called 911 and started cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” Humes said. “The Indiana officers began to arrive within two minutes after dispatch, continued CPR and their (automated external defibrillator) which defibrillated.

“Within four minutes of dispatch, the first of two West Deer EMS units arrived on scene. What followed was a response marked by professionalism, teamwork and unwavering commitment to the person in need.

“The patient regained a pulse and was transported to the hospital. Less than one week later, the patient was discharged home.”

Officers Evan Koren, Hunter Thompson and Lt. Kirk Vandenbord and West Deer EMS as a whole were highlighted in a commendation resolution passed by township supervisors earlier this year.

EMS staffers who joined the officers for the recognition at a February township meeting were Mason Bilenski, Alex Bausher and Christina Labertew.

“Their coordination, skill and dedication under pressure made the difference between loss and survival,” Humes said. “Because of their actions, someone is alive today. Someone has more time with family, more memories to make and more tomorrows to look forward to.

“The chain of survival truly worked.”

Deputy Mayor Darrin Krally said residents are fortunate to have such lifesavers in the township.

“We are truly blessed in Indiana Township to have such dedicated first responders in the form of EMTs, ambulance drivers, police and volunteer firemen,” Krally said March 24.

“Their response time to this lifesaving emergency was, literally, second to none.

“These emergency first responders have a terribly difficult job. But they consistently overachieve in their efforts within the confines of Indiana Township, as well as the surrounding communities.”

West Deer EMS has a substation at Indiana’s Town Hall allowing for quicker responses to calls in the area.

The substation was made possible about two years ago with the help of a $41,000 state grant through the Department of Community and Economic Development.

Township Manager Dan Anderson and the supervisors also were able to use at least $20,000 toward renovations.

Krally said medical calls like the one along Chatham Lane prove how valuable having a nearby medical team is for the town.

“We consistently demonstrate that we are truly a Banner Community in Allegheny County, consistently staying ahead of issues, both large and small, and a role model for our neighboring communities,” Krally said.
