The Hempfield boys and girls track teams got the season off to a strong start by winning the South Hills Classic on Saturday at Baldwin.
Isaiah Bittner (800 meters), Ryan Ewing (1,600), Jonathan Stetchock (3,200), Brayder Ser (110 hurdles, high jump), Xavier Smith (javelin), Owen Fox (pole vault) and the 3,200 relay all won events for the boys.
Other boys individual champions were North Hills’ Cody Miller (100) and Brody Diehl (triple jump), McKeesport’s Javien Robinson (200) and Tory Anderson-Pearson (300 hurdles), Beaver’s Bruce Sutter (400), West Mifflin’s Jose Perez (long jump), Upper St. Clair’s Andrew Nowak (discus) and Baldwin’s Vince Broccoli (shot put).
Winners for the Lady Spartans were Chesnee Smith (800), Madison Altman (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Mayla Brunazzi (high jump), Maddie Tulley (discus), Tessa Trageser (pole vault) and Jiana Patterson (shot put), as well as the 400 relay, 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay.
Other girls individual winners were Neighborhood Academy’s Deayja Cain (100, 200), Baldwin’s Julianne Ott (400) and Becca Gruntz (long jump, triple jump), Peters Township’s Alicia McCloskey (1,600), Allderdice’s Annie Hoffmier (3,200) and North Hills’ Emerson Schall (javelin).
Butler County Classic — Butler’s boys runners stood out at the Butler County Classic, winning six of the eight individual running events Saturday at Seneca Valley.
Kevin Shriver (100-meter dash), Carter Ekas (400), Landon Slear (800), Brendan Eicher (1,600) and Brady Dumbaugh (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles), as well as the 400 relay, 1,600 relay and 3,200 relay all claimed gold.
Golden Tornado teammates Max Walker (high jump), Jason Wick (pole vault) and Nicco Baggetta (javelin) also won events.
Other boys winners were Knoch’s Austin Friedline (200), North Catholic’s Jack Steineman (3,200) and Ryan Snyder (long jump), Seneca Valley’s Eddie Strong (triple jump) and Grove City’s DeLathian Boanes (discus, shot put).
Girls event winners were North Catholic’s Madelyn Primer (100, 200), Alexa Stoltz (400), Audra Lazzara (100 hurdles, long jump) and Anna Lazzara (shot put); Freeport’s Mackenzie Magness (pole vault); Butler’s Macie McLister (800), Avery Sintz (1,600), Zari Golojuh (3,200) and Julianna Lockwood (discus); Moniteau’s Emily Matz (300 hurdles); Grove City’s Sienna Bernardi (triple jump); and Seneca Valley’s Jordan Monteleone (high jump) and Audrey Wolfe (javelin). North Catholic also won the 400 and 3,200 relays, and Freeport won the 1,600 relay.
Baseball
Hampton 6, Valley 2 — Brody Bruce-Fritz was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Chad Moore and Caleb Custer also knocked in runs as Hampton (1-2) topped Valley (2-1) in nonsection play. Julian Danko knocked in a run for the Vikings.
Softball
Crescent (S.C.) 11, West Greene 0 — Emmaline Beazell, Katie Brudnock, Madelyn Roberts and losing pitcher Samantha Zimmerman each had a hit as West Greene (2-2) fell to Crescent (S.C.) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach.
Fairbanks (Ohio) 11, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 7 — Maddi Sineswent went 3 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as Fairbanks (Ohio) defeated OLSH (2-1) in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Leann Walzer and Sophia Wasko each had two hits and one RBI for OLSH.
Pickerington North, Ohio 15, Yough 7 — Brooke Kowalski knocked in three runs, and Kierstin Odelli had two hits and an RBI but Yough (1-2) fell to Pickerington North, Ohio at the Ripken Experience in Tennessee.
