Quaker Valley’s baseball team won its 2026 season lid-lifter April 23 after waiting out its opening day plans because of three postponements.

The Quakers defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 7-3, as winning pitcher Todd Kagle singled, doubled and drove in two runs.

“I thought we put forth a solid effort for our first time out,” QV coach Rich Garbee said. “There are things that we will take away and work some more on in practice, but, overall, it was a good start to the season … finally.”

Kagle, a senior pitcher/shortstop and Washington & Jefferson recruit, was complemented offensively by sophomore pitcher/outfielder Holden Kirkham, who belted a double and drove in one run.

Kagle led last year’s squad in batting average (.462), hits (30), RBIs (39), slugging percentage (.923), doubles (10), home runs (6) and OPS (1.456) and was second in OBP (.532). He was voted second-team all-state following the season.

“Todd is an important cog in our wheel,” Garbee said. “He was solid on the mound (against OLSH) and delivered at the plate, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. And when he came off the rubber, his defense at shortstop was solid as a rock. But that is what we expect out of a three-year starter.”

Kagle pitched three innings and struck out five batters while allowing three hits and two earned runs.

Sophomore Caden Hanna hurled three scoreless innings, fanning three batters and giving up two hits. Kirkham closed out the game on the mound, pitching one inning, allowing one earned run on two hits and recording one strikeout.

Kagle and Kirkham were supported offensively by senior center fielder Henry Zupanc and sophomore second baseman Damien McClay, who punched out one hit apiece. Zupanc also scored twice.

The Quakers were issued 10 walks in the game as sophomore left fielder Cam Neal, junior shortstop Kolton Johnson, sophomore first baseman Michael Semonik and senior catcher Brad Semonik all drew two free passes.

Michael Semonik scored two runs and Johns had one RBI.

“We are really hoping we can get into a rhythm and start playing games consistently,” Garbee said. “We also are playing a robust slate of JV games and want to get those in so the younger players can get game speed reps. We are looking forward to a fun season of playing some ball.”

QV’s three postponements earlier in March were nonsection games against Ambridge, Eden Christian Academy and Central Valley.

The Quakers were scheduled to kick off section action March 30-31 with back-to-back games against Mohawk.
