Fire Sgt. Austin Wentzell has been recognized as the 2025 Firefighter of the Year for Greensburg Volunteer Fire Department Hose Co. No. 8.

Wentzell joined the department in 2019 and is frequently present at the station outside of work hours to make sure he is available when an emergency call arises, officials said in a statement. He also serves as a backup handler for the Greensburg Bloodhound Team.

Wentzell also participates in public outreach events, training programs and other department functions.

“Firefighter of the Year is not simply someone who answers calls — it is someone who lives the job,” said fire Capt. David Jackson. “Sgt. Wentzell embodies that standard through his unwavering dedication and readiness to serve.”

The award is presented annually to a member who has shown dedication, dependability and selfless service.
