We say so long to March with the second game of section series baseball throughout the WPIAL.
Usually, the district tries to match up rivals at the end of the regular season, but in Class 3A, rivals collide in the second game of their section matchup Tuesday.
Defending WPIAL and PIAA 3A champion Riverside is home to neighboring Ellwood City at 4 p.m.
The Panthers finished the 2025 season with double gold and a record of 21-2.
They have already lost more games this season, coming out of the gates with a 1-3 record entering their section opener Monday.
The Wolverines meanwhile stormed out to a strong start. They were 4-0 heading into their first Section 1-3A series.
A year ago, the only blemish on the section record for Riverside was a shutout loss at home to Ellwood City, 4-0.
The Panthers earned a split with a road victory over the Wolverines, 9-5.
On Monday, Ellwood City routed Riverside in six innings, 11-0.
The wait is over
Three of the four WPIAL Class 5A baseball sections began series play last week.
Section 4-5A finally got underway Monday.
The first section series of the new season conclude Tuesday for the six teams in that section.
The matchups have Gateway traveling to McKeesport at 4 p.m., Thomas Jefferson hosting Baldwin at 4:30 p.m. and Connellsville visiting Montour at 5 p.m.
On Monday, Gateway edged McKeesport in nine innings, 2-1.
Baldwin won at home over Thomas Jefferson, 7-2.
This section should be competitive if nonsection results mean anything.
All six teams were at or over .500 heading into this week with an overall combined record of 11-6.
Champs get ‘set’
Tuesday marks a busy day of section play in WPIAL boys volleyball, including the section debut of the reigning WPIAL Class 3A champions.
North Allegheny, the 2025 winner, plays its first Section 1-3A match of the season as it hosts Moon in a battle of the Tigers.
NA has only played one non-tournament match this season, beating 2025 Class 2A champion Shaler two weeks ago.
Moon is still searching for its first win this season after losing all four matches thus far, including a setback to Pine-Richland in their section opener last week, 3-0.
