A former local basketball star experienced March Madness at the highest level.
Kentucky assistant coach Ciara Gregory (Jeannette) and the Wildcats reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
They fell to top-seeded Texas, 76-54, to finish the season 25-11.
Gregory is a second-year assistant who also serves as the team’s director of basketball operations.
She coached on the staff at Charlotte, her alma mater, for five seasons before arriving in Lexington.
She still holds career records at Charlotte for 3-pointers made (235) and attempted (695).
Gregory is Jeannette’s girls all-time scoring leader with 2,130 points, second in school history behind Terrelle Pryor (2,285).
Poulich breaks record
Robert Morris softball has a new home run queen.
Redshirt senior Courtney Poulich (Mt. Pleasant) smashed her 36th career homer Sunday to break the program mark.
She had tied Kali Byers’ record with her 35th homer. Byers set the mark in 2006.
Poulich, who broke the record in an 11-7 win at Oakland, has 14 homers this season, two off her career high of 16 set in 2025.
Baseball
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Ben Aftanas went 2 for 3 with two runs while senior Tommy Smith, senior Colin Solinski and freshman Landon Snider had two hits apiece as UPG beat Hilbert, 5-1, at Sergeant Stadium in Johnstown. UPG was the home team. Smith drove in three runs and Neo Smith doubled for the Bobcats.
Junior Conner Burkey (Hempfield) was named the AMCC Athlete of the Week. He pitched a complete game with four strikeouts in the victory over Hilbert.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Brady McGuire delivered a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning to score senior Jack Whalen (Norwin) as the Griffins squeezed past IUP, 3-2, in the second of a four-game PSAC series. Whalen, who went 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs, stole third to set up the winning score. Freshman Brady Stone (Penn-Trafford) added two hits, and junior Mark Wechenhiser pitched a complete game three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks.
Seton Hill won the first game, 5-4, as Whalen and Stone each had two hits, and junior Jakob Haynes (Penn-Trafford) and junior Owen Henne hit home runs for the Griffins.
In the third game, Henne, Haynes and senior Colin Ahr each had two hits, with Haynes launching two home runs and driving in four, in a 6-3 win.
The Griffins (21-5, 8-0) completed the sweep with a 13-8 win as Whalen went 4 for 5 with two homers and seven RBIs, while McGuire had four hits, and Haynes hit another homer.
For the series, Whalen went 10 for 16 with nine RBIs, two homers, a double, a triple and five runs. Haynes had four homers, seven RBIs and four runs for the Griffins, who have won 10 straight. IUP senior Elijah Dunn (Norwin) had three homers and six RBI in the series.
Whalen was awarded for his efforts as he was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week.
Junior Zach Herb was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. The reliever had a pair of saves in the IUP series, allowing just one hit and no runs, while striking out five.
Westminster: Sophomore Ian Temple (Penn-Trafford) had two hits, drove in a run and stole a base as Westminster blanked Saint Vincent, 6-0.
Softball
Bloomsburg: Junior Josie Straigis (Latrobe) is hitting .298 with 15 runs and 12 RBIs this season through 16 games. She also sees time in the pitching circle where she is 6-2 with a 3.73 ERA and a WHIP of 1.44.
Bowling Green: Katie Hutter (Mt. Pleasant) was hitting .271 through 22 games, 20 of which she started. She had five doubles and eight RBIs.
IUP: Freshman Cam Ponko (Penn-Trafford) went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, senior Maddie Griffin (Ligonier Valley) scored four runs and junior Bri Pusateri (Penn-Trafford) doubled and drove in two for the Crimson Hawks in a 15-9 win over Ashland.
Kent State: Freshman pitcher Riley Miller (Hempfield) was 8-6 with a 5.02 ERA in 23 appearances – 14 starts – for the Golden Flashes. She had six complete games and was leading the team with 35 strikeouts.
Pitt-Greensburg: Senior Autumn Powell earned the shutout, sophomore Shelby Cloak went 2 for 3 with a triple and two runs, and junior Hunter Taylor drove in four runs as UPG (3-10) blanked Waynesburg, 10-0, in five innings.
Saint Vincent: The Bearcats swept Allegheny, 6-4 and 10-6, to move to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the PAC.
In the second game, the Bearcats trailed 6-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning but exploded for nine runs. Sophomore Eva Farone, junior Alyssa Henderson, sophomore Josey Michalski (Norwin) and sophomore Abby Bauer each had two hits – Bauer and freshman Samantha Farrell doubled – with freshman Emily Dudenhoeffer and Michalski each driving in two runs for the Bearcats.
In the opener, Michalski went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs, while Farone had two hits, and Henderson drove in a pair.
Dudenhoeffer was named the PAC Newcomer of the Week.
Seton Hill: The Griffins staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh to edge IUP. Junior Lacey Lynn reached on a fielder’s choice, and two runs scored as the Griffins won, 5-4, to even their record at 13-13 (6-2 PSAC West). Sophomore Abby Dejidas and sophomore Shelby Telegdy each had two hits.
Seton Hill also posted a one-run win in the second game of the doubleheader, winning 4-3 as Dejidas went 3 for 3 and Lynn homered and drove in three runs.
Westminster: Sophomore pitcher Cheyenne Piper (Ligonier Valley) retired 16 consecutive hitters, striking out 11 and walked one for the game, in a 3-0 shutout of Chatham. Piper notched her third 10-strikeout performance of the season.
She added another complete game, striking out nine while allowing one earned run in a 3-1 victory over Hiram. Junior Leah Taliani (Valley) added a double and a walk.
Piper was named the PAC Pitcher of the Week.
Men’s volleyball
Chatham: Sophomore Tim McCabe (Norwin) had a career-high 26 kills to pace the Cougars to a 3-1 victory over Saint Vincent, ending the Bearcats’ 14-game winning streak. He added 10 kills and hit .292 with a pair of aces and seven digs to lead the Cougars to a 3-0 win over Hiram.
Grove City: Junior Carson Good (Penn-Trafford) had nine kills, and junior Andrew Kessler (Penn-Trafford) added six in a 3-0 victory over Bethany to clinch a spot in the PAC Tournament.
Men’s track & field
Cal (Pa.): Freshman Aidon Lett (Penn-Trafford) earned a pair of PSAC qualifying times at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. He imrpoved his 400-meter hurdles time with a 55.59-second effort and also advanced to the conference meet in the 110 hurdles (15.03 seconds).
Seton Hill: Junior Jacy Willis won the 400-meter dash at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational and helped the 1,600-meter relay to a victory in 3:20.02. Willis also ran with the second-place 400-meter relay (42.73).
Women’s track & field
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Grace Neubert was named the PAC Track Athlete of the Week. She broke the program record in the 1,500-meter run with a mark of 4 minutes, 41.40 seconds to finish fourth at the Washington & Lee Carnival. The time is the fastest in the PAC and Mid-Atlantic Region this season. Neubert wasn’t finished as she broke the program mark in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:22.02, to take third at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
Seton Hill: Sophomore Nemani Moon finished second in the 800-meter run in 2:16.69 at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.
Westminster: Sophomore Grace Iwig (Hempfield) finished tied for sixth in the pole vault at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational with a height of 3.46 meters. She added a fifth-place finish in the high jump (1.55 meters).
Men’s lacrosse
Grove City: Junior goalkeeper Kyle Gill (Norwin) played the final 15 minutes and made a pair of saves in a 20-5 win against Westminster in PAC play.
Saint Vincent: Sophomore Connor Smith was named the PAC Offensive Player of the Week. He had 11 points over a pair of wins, including seven goals and four assists.
Sophomore Mason Krabbe, meantime, was named the PAC Specialist of the Week. He was 29 for 35 on faceoffs and had 25 grounds balls in two wins.
Women’s lacrosse
Grove City: Junior attacker Gwen Shilling (Franklin Regional) had three goals, including two in the final five minutes, as the Wolverines defeated Westminster, 14-10.
Seton Hill: Senior Mila Udovicic scored six goals and had two assists and nine draw controls to power the Griffins (6-3, 3-0) past Edinboro, 18-8. Senior Elena Traficante added a hat trick, and senior Ruby DePalma had four assists in the win.
Men’s golf
Westminster: Freshman Aydan Gross (Mt. Pleasant) tied for 44th (81-77-158) at the Pennsylvania Classic at the Penn State Blue Course.
Women’s golf
Westminster: Senior Olivia Kane (Greensburg Central Catholic) finished 34th (96-96-192) at the Pennsylvania Classic at the Penn State White Course.
