After operating on the South Side for more than three decades, Fat Head’s Saloon announced Tuesday that the longtime destination for craft beer and food will be shuttering April 26.
The saloon will host a “Last Call” gathering on April 17, for former employees and longtime regulars to reconnect and share one last round together.
“Closing the doors is incredibly difficult, but we do it with pride, gratitude and a lifetime of memories,” Fat Head’s said in social media postings Tuesday.
The Fat Head’s company first opened as a craft beer-centric restaurant in Pittsburgh’s South Side in 1992 and has been owned by the original owners, Glenn and Michelle Benigni, since.
In 2009, the Benignis partnered with Matt Cole and opened a brewpub in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, which now acts as Fat Head’s headquarters. In 2018, the company opened a second satellite brewpub, located near the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in Stark County, Ohio, according to Fat Head’s website.
The bar had both a mix of Fat Head’s beers with a selection of American and international craft beers across 40 draft lines, as detailed on its website.
The Benignis could not be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon about the decision to close the location.
“Over the years, we’ve watched strangers become friends, and friends become family. We’ve seen first dates turn into marriages, babies being born, families raised,” the post said.
The bar’s Facebook post had more than 100 comments.
“I am at a loss for words. In the time I worked there [I] learned so much, met so many cool people, made good friends, made so many good memories…. this one I didn’t see coming and it hurts,” said one user.
“Awwwwww this makes me so sad. Soooo many great memories……Glenn, you Michelle and your entire team and family……absolutely rocked. We were lucky to have this place!! Cheers, cuz. PS if this is an April fools joke 1 day early……I won’t be mad!” said another.
