As we change the calendar from March to April, you won’t get fooled again, unless of course Mother Nature rains on everybody’s parade Wednesday.
It’s a busy day on the district softball diamonds, including a key early season clash in Class 6A.
On Monday, Hempfield defeated Seneca Valley in a rematch of the 2025 WPIAL finals, 5-2.
The Raiders look to bounce back Wednesday when they host Canon-McMillan at 4 p.m.
Seneca Valley began the post-Lexi Hames era with four consecutive wins, including two 6A victories, before falling to home to the Spartans.
Now the Raiders look to avoid a second straight home loss against the red-hot Big Macs.
Canon-McMillan has been perfect out of the gates this season, winning all four of its games, including the first three 6A contests.
In their last two wins, the Big Macs outscored Mt. Lebanon and Butler, 29-6.
The other three midweek 6A softball games include Hempfield (2-0, 4-1) hosting Mt. Lebanon (1-2, 1-3), Pine-Richland (1-2, 2-3) visiting North Allegheny (0-2, 0-3) and Butler (0-3, 0-5) traveling to Norwin (2-1, 2-2).
Fights for first
We are only beginning the month of April, but there are several battles for first place up and down the six classifications in WPIAL softball coming up Wednesday, including:
• In Section 4-5A, Baldwin is home to Thomas Jefferson. The Highlanders are 3-0 in the section and 5-1 overall with five consecutive victories. The Jaguars are also 3-0 in section play and 4-1 this season and have outscored their opponents this year, 37-8.
• In Section 1-3A, Mt. Pleasant travels to Deer Lakes. Both teams are 1-0 in section play with the Vikings having won two of their three games this season and the Lancers winning three of four.
• In Section 3-3A, it’s a battle of undefeated teams when South Park is home to Steel Valley. Both teams won their section opener Monday as the Eagles sit at 4-0 overall and the Ironmen are 2-0.
• In Section 1-2A, two northern powers collide for the first time when Neshannock visits Shenango. The four-time district champion Lancers are 2-0 in the section and 3-0 overall while the Wildcats sit at 1-0 in section play and 5-0 for the season.
• In Section 3-2A, perennial power Chartiers-Houston looks to remain perfect as it visits Burgettstown. The Buccaneers are 1-0 in the section but 6-0 this season, and the Blue Devils also are 1-0 in section and 2-2 for the year.
• In Section 1-A, Union heads to Hookstown to battle South Side. The Scotties are 2-0 in section and 3-1 overall, and the Rams are 2-0 in section play with an overall record of 2-3.
