Two-time WPIAL doubles champ Logan Memije of Gateway has his sights sets on a singles crown.
Memije defeated Franklin Regional’s Colin Stalnaker, 6-2, 6-0, on Wednesday to win the Section 1-3A boys tennis title. He beat Stalnaker’s Franklin Regional teammate Sanshiro Ogawa, 6-3, 6-0, in the semifinals earlier in the day.
In the third-place match, Ogawa defeated Hempfield’s Christian Schrumpf via walkover. Schrumpf was injured in a semifinal match with Stalnaker. The top four finishers advance to the WPIAL tournament.
Section 2-3A – North Allegheny teammates Advaita Sircar and Evan Kaufman will meet for the section title Thursday. Sircar did not lose a game in three matches en route to the finals, defeating Sewickley Academy’s Will Bojalad in the semifinals. Kaufman beat Sewickley Academy freshman Johan Harmon, 6-2, 6-2.
Section 3-3A – A pair of Shady Side Academy freshmen, Max Bunimovich and Thomas Luther, advanced to the section finals. Luther retired, giving the title to Bunimovich, who defeated Thomas Jefferson’s Rylan Barr in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-1. Luther defeated Baldwin’s Nikitia Petruk, 6-4, 6-3. Barr beat Petruk for third place.
Section 4-3A – In the most closely contested section final of the day, Mt. Lebanon junior Luca Ritovoi defeated Bethel Park freshman Gavin Hughes in three sets, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5). In the semifinals, Ritovoi beat South Fayette’s Harshal Pallerla, 6-1, 6-1, and Hughes advanced past Upper St. Clair’s Carter Lichtman via injury default.
Section 1-2A – Winchester Thurston sophomore Ravi Stanger and Mt. Pleasant sophomore Aydan Gross won hard-fought semifinals to reach Thursday’s section championship match. Stanger defeated Valley’s Tyler Quinn, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0. Gross got past Silas Morris of Greensburg Salem, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Section 2-2A – Defending WPIAL champion Max Henson of Belle Vernon did not drop a game in three matches, defeating South Park’s Praves Wagley in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-0. In Thursday’s finals, he’ll meet Montour’s Jonah Camardese, a winner over Frazier’s Nolan Taucher in three sets in the other semifinal, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3.
Section 3-2A – Returning WPIAL runner-up Justin Garvey of North Catholic advanced to Thursday’s finals without dropping a game, defeating Quaker Valley’s Tanner Schultz, 6-0, 6-0, in the semifinals. He’ll meet Quaker Valley’s Will Meagher, a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal winner over Alex Weber of North Catholic.
Section 4-2A – The top two seeds will meet for the section title Thursday when Blackhawk’s Ben Crefeld faces Central Valley’s Cody Clayton. In the semifinals. Crefeld defeated Central Valley’s Hunter Hazelwood, 6-3, 6-1, and Clayton downed Blackhawk’s Mike Lanigan, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
