Mykel Bruce-McCrommon knows where he will call home at the collegiate level.

The 6-foot-8 Gateway senior standout announced Thursday afternoon he will play basketball for veteran coach Mark Turgeon at Division I Missouri-Kansas City in the Summit League.

Bruce-McCrommon posted on X that he was “100 percent committed” to the Roos.

“I am ecstatic, just so happy for Mykel,” Gateway coach Vern Benson said.

“When coach Turgeon came to Gateway and watched Mykel and evaluated him, he was impressed. At the end of the day, I asked (Turgeon) if he needed to see any more, and he said he saw all that he needed to see. You are talking about an experienced coach who knows what he is looking for.

“He said he had been watching him and felt Mykel got better each time he saw him. It was a shame that Mykel didn’t have more offers. His ceiling is high. He’s still growing and is still improving his skill set.”

Turgeon was hired as Missouri-Kansas City head coach in early February and soon after made the offer.

The Roos are hoping for a bright future as they look to recover from a 4-27 record this past season.

Turgeon coached seven years at Wichita State and raised to Shockers to national relevance. In his 24 years of head coaching experience, he owns an overall .634 win percentage (476-275 record) with additional head coaching tenures at Maryland, Texas A&M and Jacksonville State.

He has taken 10 teams to the NCAA Tournament.

Bruce-McCrommon also had a Division I offer from Iona and had interest locally from Duquesne and Robert Morris as well as from Pittsburgh native and Arkansas coach John Calipari.

A lot of eyes remained on him throughout the 2025-26 season, and he didn’t disappoint.

Bruce-McCrommon averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and shot a strong percentage from both two- and 3-point range to help Gateway capture the Section 1-5A championship and advance to the WPIAL quarterfinals before falling to Moon.

However, the Gators, who finished 18-10 overall, bounced back in the consolation bracket to solidify their spot in the state tournament with a 68-53 victory over Shaler. Bruce-McCrommon fronted the Gateway attack with 26 points against the Titans.

He led Gateway with 15 points in a 49-39 PIAA Class 5A first-round victory over District 3’s Milton-Hershey.

The Gators saw their season come to a close with a loss to District 6 Johnstown in the next round.
