The Pittsburgh Steelers begin voluntary offseason workouts in less than a week, according to a schedule released Friday by the NFL.
Each team can hold a nine-week program focused on training, teaching and physical conditioning under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.
The Steelers’ start date is Tuesday.
Teams with a new head coach, such as the Steelers and Mike McCarthy, begin offseason workouts earlier than others. They also are permitted to schedule a voluntary minicamp prior to the NFL Draft. The Steelers’ minicamp is April 20-22.
The Steelers’ organized team activities — or OTAs — are May 18, May 20-22, May 26, May 28-29, June 8-9 and June 11-12. Mandatory minicamp is June 2-4.
The NFL divides the nine-week offseason schedule into three phases.
Phase 1 last two weeks, during which activities are limited to meetings, strength and condition and physical rehabilitation.
Phase 2 is a three-week period where on-field workouts are permitted but offense vs. defense drills and live contact are prohibited.
OTAs are allowed in Phase 3, which lasts four weeks. Live contact remains prohibited, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.
Teams can also hold a seven-week rookie development program starting May 11.
