Norwin lost the look of a playoff contender last season, finishing 5-12 to fall well short of its expectations.
But Knights coach Mike Palaschak thinks the team can “flush it,” like Paul Skenes did with his season-opening start, and return to the WPIAL boys volleyball postseason.
“Our goal is to turn that around by maintaining a positive mindset and building stronger habits as a team,” Palaschak said. “We believe this group has the potential to compete for a section title and make a meaningful impact in the playoffs. To reach that level, we will need to stay focused, disciplined and accountable to one another.”
Two starters return to lead a mostly young rotation. Junior Owen Fonzi is a 6-foot setter, and Wyatt Painter is a 6-5 outside hitter.
“The group brings a great deal of energy, confidence and potential,” Palaschak said. “We have already seen flashes of strong play, and our focus will be on developing consistency and maintaining a steady, disciplined approach throughout matches.”
Other players looking to make their mark on the team include sophomore libero Lucas Giebel, junior right-side hitter Ian Cristina, sophomore middle hitter Luke Marzec, junior outside hitter Christian Reiter, sophomore outside hitter and serving specialist Jax Ruffolo and junior middle hitter Kameron Klass.
Norwin will use an offense that utilizes four attackers at all times, with all positions in place to swing and contribute, Palaschak said.
“This should allow us to be more dynamic and difficult to defend,” he said. “Limiting scoring runs by our opponents, and especially preventing one point from turning into extended into runs, will be a key area of emphasis.
“While we are young, we are eager to grow through experience and continue improving each day.”
Norwin started 1-1, including a 3-2 win over Baldwin (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 15-11).
