Jack Sedlak Memorial Clean Up Day

The 31st annual Jack Sedlak Memorial Clean Up Day will take place April 25 throughout Monroeville.

Volunteer groups can register, choose a road, park or neighborhood to focus on, and spend 9 to 11 a.m. picking up litter.

To register, call the Monroeville Recreation and Parks Department at 412-856-1006. The deadline to register is April 20.

All supplies will be provided by Monroeville and PennDOT officials, including a vest, gloves and trash bags.

All participants will receive a free Clean Up Day T-shirt. An appreciation picnic will follow in Monroeville Community Park West.

Pitcairn Lions Club events

The club’s Fresh Market will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month. There are no income requirements to receive food.

A mystery dinner fundraiser will take place April 18. Tickets are $30 and include a dinner of salad, pasta, soft drinks and dessert. For more, call 412-352-9545.

Marines still looking for a few good men

The Forbes Trail Detachment 797 of the Marine Corps League invites all honorably discharged Marines, FMF Corpsmen and FMF Navy Chaplains to join its ranks.

As the only federally chartered Marine Corps veterans organization, Forbes Trail Detachment 797 is a nonprofit dedicated to community service and veteran fellowship. From local parades and Honor Guards to the annual picnic and birthday celebration, members stay active in the Monroeville area and ensure the traditions of the Corps live on.

Peabody High School planning 40th reunion

Peabody High School’s Class of 1986 is planning its 40-year reunion on Aug. 14-16.

The three-day event includes an Aug. 14 icebreaker; dinner, dancing and music Aug. 15 at Christ the Divine Mercy Academy Lourdes Center in Monroeville; and a family picnic Aug. 16 in Highland Park.

There will be door prizes and other giveaways at the dinner.

Tickets for the three-day event are $75 for singles and $125 for couples. You also can order a Peabody reunion T-shirt for $20.

Blood drive set at Lourdes Center

Donate blood in honor of your mom this May.

Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish is hosting a blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, May 17, at the Lourdes Center, 245 Azalea Drive, Monroeville.

The last draw will be taken at 12:15 p.m.

Plum AARP to gather April 14, May 12

Plum AARP will hold its next meeting at noon April 14 in the American Legion Post 980, 7824 Saltsburg Road, Plum.

Its May meeting will be the annual Spring Luncheon, set for 11:30 a.m. May 12 at Palmieri’s Restaurant in Plum.

April’s meeting will have no entertainment. The program is to bring and play games at the meeting. Two slices of pizza will be served for $4, plus the usual free cake and coffee and tea.

For the Spring Luncheon in May, the entertainment will be Chris Denem, who will sing Neil Diamond and Johnny Cash songs. Tickets cost $30.

Plum AARP is a social/service organization open to residents of Monroeville, Plum, Penn Hills and the surrounding communities. Almost every meeting features either entertainment or a speaker. AARP hosts a Christmas party, a May luncheon and an August social, as well as two hot dog/condiments/chips luncheons for $3. The group also offers the opportunity to book one-day or multiple-days trips, presented every month by a representative from Thomas Tours. All this is offered for dues of only $15 per year.

Newcomers are welcome to come to a regular meeting, which is always held at noon at the American Legion on the second Tuesday of each month, except June.

Juniper Village names new executive director

Juniper Village at Monroeville, 2589 Mosside Blvd., recently appointed Aimee Grayson as its new executive director.

Grayson brings extensive leadership experience in human services and senior living, with a focus on balancing operational excellence with deeply personal, resident-centered care experiences.

“My goal is to bridge the gap between rigorous operational standards and the deeply personal nature of care,” Grayson said. “I believe leadership is most effective when it is participative, respectful and rooted in the success of the entire team.”

Grayson has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and psychology from Waynesburg University and is a certified investigator.

Grayson also is involved in her community. She volunteers with the Salvation Army to support regional hunger relief and youth housing initiatives. She also is a proud mother to a 17-year-old culinary student who inspires her creativity in the kitchen.

In her new role at Juniper Village at Monroeville, Grayson will continue Juniper Communities’ mission of nurturing the spirit of life by fostering an environment where residents thrive and associates are empowered to deliver exceptional care and meaningful experiences every day.

Rotary fundraiser to help fight food insecurity

The Monroeville Rotary is hosting its second annual Taste of Spring fundraiser from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 16 at The Legacy Event Center, formerly the DoubleTree Hotel, at 101 Mall Blvd.

Tickets are $70 and include food and beverage tasting and live entertainment. There also will be a 50-50 drawing and basket raffles.

All proceeds support local programs to fight food insecurity.

Church to serve spaghetti dinner

Monroeville United Methodist Church is holding a Spaghetti Dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. April 18. The meal will include spaghetti with homemade meatballs, salad, bread and beverage.

The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for 13 and younger, and free for children 2 and younger. Dessert will be available to purchase. There also will be a silent auction with lots of unique items and great baskets to bid on.

Catholic Charities providing free dental care

Catholic Charities is hosting free dental care to adults 18 and older at its free health care center from 9 to 11 a.m. Mondays through Fridays through April 18.

The center is located at 111 Blvd. of the Allies in Downtown Pittsburgh.

No appointments are necessary. The free services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Dental exams provided include oral cancer screenings, abscess checks and dental disease evaluations.

Care planning will be offered to connect participants to follow-up care and treatment, if needed.

Participants can expect friendly staff and student providers, a respectful and no-judgment environment, and a chance to improve one’s health and smile.

Exhibitors, sponsors sought for career fair

Gateway Middle School is planning a career fair from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. May 14 for eighth grade students and is still seeking exhibitors and sponsors.

The school welcomes any and all presenters but is especially interested in those with a job in health care, law, hospitality or tourism. This educational event will help students learn more about a variety of careers before moving on to high school.

Gateway to stage ‘Catch Me If You Can’

Gateway High School’s thespians will present “Catch Me If You Can: The Musical” in April at the Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center, 3000 Gateway Campus Blvd.

The comedy will be staged at 7:30 p.m. April 10 and 15-18 and 2 p.m. April 18. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors 65 and older.

Based on the hit film and a true story, “Catch Me If You Can” is about chasing one’s dreams and not getting caught.

Seeking fame and fortune, precocious teenager Frank Abagnale Jr. runs away from home to begin an unforgettable adventure. With nothing more than his boyish charm, a big imagination and millions of dollars in forged checks, Abagnale successfully poses as a pilot, doctor and lawyer — living the high life and winning the girl of his dreams. When his lies catch the attention of FBI agent Carl Hanratty though, a pursuit ensues across the country to make him pay for his crimes.

Pitcairn accepting applications for Night Market in April

Pitcairn will hold its annual Night Market from 6 to 9 p.m. April 24 on Broadway Street from Dan’s Floral to Dick’s Sports Bar.

Organized by the Park and Recreation Committee, the free, all-ages event is open to the public and aims to help promote local small businesses.

Applications for vendors, crafters and food trucks are being accepted now through April 12. The cost is $25 per space. Applications can be submitted to the borough office or emailed to Lisa Petrosky at lisa@tech2nite.com.

Cash bash to benefit animal sanctuary

The White Oak Athletic Association will host an April 18 fundraiser for the Gray Paws Sanctuary, which provides quality care to abandoned senior dogs.

It will be from 6 to 10 p.m. April 18 at the association, 1798 Lower Heckman Road in White Oak.

The cost is $25, and there will be cash drawings every 15 minutes. Admission includes dinner, snacks and beverages. The evening also will include auction baskets, a 50-50 drawing and more.
