The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team did something recently that it had not done in 34 years: defeat NCJAA Division I Potomac State (W.Va.).
The Wolfpack (15-7) not only won one game, but they also swept a doubleheader by the scores of 14-4 and 13-6.
Freshmen Jake Sincak (Norwin), Sean Franzi (Plum), Noah Matson (Kiski Area), Jake Domkowski (Plum) and Owen Dumbroski led the offense in the 14-4 win.
Sincak had two hits and three RBIs, Franzi had three hits (two doubles) and four RBIs, Domkowski had two hits (home run), Dumbroski had four hits (double) and four runs scored and Matson had two hits (triple and double) and three RBIs.
In the second game, Sincak had three hits (a double and two home runs) and five RBIs, Franzi had two hits and two RBIs, Dumbroski added two RBIs, Tyler Martin (Greensburg Salem) tripled and Owen Saiani (Homer-Center) had two hits (double).
“Anytime you can beat a Division I program, it is good,” WCCC coach Mike Draghi said. “It was also nice to sweep a doubleheader because we had trouble doing that.”
The Wolfpack split a doubleheader against Allegany of Maryland. WCCC won Game 1, 2-0, behind he the three-hit shutout pitching or Erik Streussnig (Plum). The sophomore struck out five and walked none.
Allegany won Game 2, 13-9.
Sophomore Jake Gedekoh (Belle Vernon) had three hits (double) and three RBIs.
Sincak had two hits and two RBIs, Domkowski added two hits (double), Franzi added a triple and Darren DeRiggi (Frankli Regional) had a double.
“The key this season has been our hitting,” Draghi said. “We are hitting .333 as a team, and we have scored 193 runs.”
Sincak is batting .456, Franzi .415 and Saiani .411. The RBI leaders are Franzi (25), Sincak (21) and Gedekoh (20) .
WCCC plays host to Essex Community College of Baltimore County at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Montgomery College of Maryland on Thursday and plays three games this weekend against Community College of Allegheny County.
