A Butler County man is accused of taking $18,000 from a woman in 2025 to repair a roof in McCandless and then not doing the work.
State police in Butler charged Bruce Wayne Huff, 52, of Butler Township on April 7 with a felony count of home improvement fraud, according to court records.
According to a criminal complaint, the homeowner reported to state police on Feb. 12 that she had paid Huff $18,000 to repair the roof of a house on Northgate Drive after a tree fell on it.
After talking to Huff in person and through phone calls and text messages, the woman told police she wrote the check to Huff on May 28, 2025, because he needed money for materials, the complaint states. He cashed the check and told her he would be at the house to complete the work on a certain day.
The woman told police Huff never showed up and said it happened a few more times until he stopped answering her calls and texts, the complaint states. The woman took out a loan to hire another contractor in August or September to work on the roof.
State police interviewed Huff at his home on Feb. 14. According to the complaint, Huff said he was contracted to fix the roof and cashed the check, but did not have the money.
Huff said he could not find workers to help him work on the roof but didn’t have an answer for why he stopped answering the woman, the complaint states.
Huff did not have an attorney listed in court records and had not been arraigned on the charge as of April 7.
