The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned forward prospect Mikhail Ilyin to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League (AHL) on Wednesday.

A fifth-round draft pick (No. 142 overall) in 2023, the 21-year-old Ilyin had been skating with Cherepovets Severstal of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).

The Russian-born Ilyin was that team’s second-leading scorer this season with 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists) in 68 games.

Cherepovets Severstal’s postseason came to a conclusion March 31 when it was eliminated from the first round of the KHL’s postseason by Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, losing a best-of-seven series, 4-1. In the series, Ilyin had four points (three goals, one assist) over five games.

The left-handed Ilyin (6-foot-3, 191 pounds), is in the first year of a three-year entry-level contract with a salary cap hit of $851,667. He signed that contract with the Penguins on May 31, 2005.

“My best (attribute) is I.Q,” Ilyin said last July when he attended a development camp with the Penguins. “I can see the ice. The (area) that I’ve got to definitely work on is speed. Skating.”

Additionally, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins signed defenseman Quinn Beauchesne and forward Ryan Miller, each members of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2025 draft class, to amateur tryout contracts for the remainder of this season.

A fifth-round pick (No. 148), the right-handed Beauchesne (6-foot, 184 pounds) appeared in 56 games this season for the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League and posted 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists).

Miller, also a fifth-round selection (No. 130 overall), served as captain of the Western Hockey League’s Portland Winterhawks this season. In 65 games, the left-handed Miller (6-foot, 177 pounds) was that team’s second-leading scorer with 75 points (30 goals, 45 assists).
