Leechburg Police Chief Jason Schaffer is reminding residents to lock their cars.
The department received reports of about seven cars that had been entered around 2 a.m. Tuesday, he said.
“That’s just what was reported,” Schaffer said.
The vehicles that were hit, Schaffer said, were unlocked. People reported finding their car doors and glove boxes open when they went out to their car Tuesday morning, he said.
The thieves seemed to be going into cars at random to look for valuables like cash, electronics and jewelry, Schaffer said. He said some people reported their cars being entered and nothing being taken. A 40-caliber handgun was stolen out of a vehicle during the incident.
“There’s a video of them going down the street and going into cars with (the gun),” Schaffer said.
Neighbors have submitted videos from their own surveillance systems and have posted clips on social media. The people can be seen trying car door handles and walking down various streets in the borough.
Schaffer said the three suspects were dressed in black and were wearing masks and gloves. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday morning. Schaffer said officers had not received any new theft reports Wednesday.
Schaffer asked that residents do not confront the thieves and should, instead, call the police.
“We don’t want people harming themselves or anyone else,” he said.
If people suspect their car was entered or if something was taken from their vehicles, Schaffer advised filing a police report.
“We can’t take a report from Facebook,” he said.
