Some rain on Monday and frosty temps the following day led to some postponements on the WPIAL baseball schedule.

One day’s loss is another day’s gain as several key district section series are set to conclude Thursday.

• In Section 1-5A, Plum entered the week as the only unbeaten team, one game ahead of four teams, including a pair of 3-1 schools in Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford.

After winning big on Wednesday, Plum hosts Penn-Trafford at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The Mustangs are 3-0 in the section and 8-0 on the season.The Warriors have won three of their five section games and six of their nine games overall.

• Everybody is looking up at Pine-Richland in Section 3-5A, so two teams hot on its heels wrap up their series when New Castle hosts Fox Chapel at 4 p.m.

They needed extrta innings in the opener on Wednesday before Fox Chapel edged visiting New Castle in nine innings, 6-5.

The Red Hurricanes are 1-2 in section play and 5-2 for the season.The Foxes are looking to hang near the top as they sit at 3-2 in section play and 4-4 for the season.

• In Section 4-5A, the top two teams entering this week conclude their section series in prime time as Montour visits Gateway at 7 p.m.

Montour crushed Gateway in the opener to take a one-game lead in the standings.

The Gators are now 2-1 in the section and 4-4 this season while the Spartans improved to 3-0 in the section are 5-2 overall.

• In Section 3-4A, reigning district and state 4A champion Indiana visits Derry at 4:15 p.m.

Indiana defeated Derry on Wednesday, 8-2.

The Little Indians are 3-0 in Section 3-4A and 5-0 this season. The Trojans are now two games back at 1-2 in the section and 4-4 overall.

• In Section 1-3A, defending WPIAL and PIAA champ Riverside hits the road to visit Mohawk at 4:30 p.m.

The Panthers are 2-1 in the section after beating Mohawk in eight innings Wednesday, and they are 3-4 this season. The Warriors are 1-1 in the section and 4-1 on the season.

• In Section 2-2A, 2025 2A winner Freedom hosts Neshannock at 4 p.m.

The Bulldogs are 4-1 atop the section and 4-3 this season after their four-game win streak ended in a close loss to Neshannock on Wednesday, 5-4.

The Lancers are 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the section after their opening game win.

‘Big’ is being challenged

Canon-McMillan entered this week as the only undefeated softball team this season in Class 6A.

The Big Macs were tied with Hempfield for first place in the classification heading into back-to-back big challenges.

On Wednesday, defending champion Hempfield flexed its muscles and crushed Canon-McMillan, 13-0.

Just over 24 hours later, the Big Macs head north to visit Seneca Valley at 6 p.m.

The 2022 and 2024 champion and 2023 and 2025 district runner-up Raiders are 4-1 in 6A and 6-1 overall after defeating Pine-Richland on Wednesday.

The lone blemish on the Seneca Valley record was a loss last week to Hempfield, 5-2.

Serving for first

Thursday marks another busy evening of district boys volleyball with first place at stake in two of the scheduled section matches.

In Section 3-3A, rivals Hempfield (4-3) and Norwin (5-1) square off. Both teams are 3-0 atop the section standings. The Spartans will visit the Knights.

In Section 4-2A, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (7-0) travels to South Fayette (7-0) with first place at stake.

The Chargers are 4-0 in the section while the Lions have won all three of their section matches.

Singles tennis finals set

The first WPIAL championships of the spring sports season are officially set for Thursday in the 2026 WPIAL boys singles tennis championships.

In Class 3A, 2025 runner-up, Advaita Sircar of North Allegheny, the top seed this year, will meet No. 6 seed Evan Kaufman of North Allegheny in a black-and-gold title match ironically enough being played at North Allegheny.

In the 3A consolation match, No. 2 Logan Memije of Gateway takes on surprise No. 12 seed Carter Lichtman of Upper St. Clair.

In Class 2A, reigning champion Max Henson of Belle Vernon looks to repeat as the No. 1 seed battles No. 3 seed Will Meagher of Quaker Valley.

The 2A consolation match pits No 4 seed Justin Garvey of North Catholic against No. 2 seed Silas Morris of Greensburg Salem.

The championship and consolation finals in both classes are set to begin Thursday at 1 p.m. at NA.
