Sewickley officials believe they live in one of the best towns around.
USA Today readers agree as they have recently named the Allegheny County borough the No. 1 small town in the Northeast.
The announcement came as part of the media outlet’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
Ten towns in the Northeast, each with a population of fewer than 25,000, were nominated by an expert panel.
They were voted by readers as the best for their scenery, historic charm, local cuisine and cultural attractions, according to the company’s website.
Its Readers’ Choice Award post states Sewickley “is known for its leafy streets and upscale boutiques. Featuring well-preserved architecture, the town seamlessly blends historic charm with modern sophistication. It has a thriving cultural scene, spearheaded by the Sweetwater Center for the Arts, which offers hundreds of classes to the community and adds an enriching layer to this tranquil destination along the Ohio River.”
Other towns on the small town list were Stowe, Vt.; Cape May, N.J.; Boothbay Harbor, Maine; Provincetown, Mass.; Castine, Maine; New Hope, Pa.; Corning, N.Y.; Ohiopyle, Pa. and Woodstock, Vt.
Sewickley was No. 2 on the list last year.
Mayor George Shannon said he was surprised at the announcement.
“We didn’t know when those people were in Sewickley, but obviously they were,” Shannon said April 8. “They mentioned things in their article about culture and history. To me, the best part of Sewickley are the people who live in Sewickley. They really appreciate the history of Sewickley and what they have and the friendliness of the town.
“The key to Sewickley is you can walk anywhere.”
The mayor also highlighted the borough’s police, firefighters, administrators and community organizations like the Sewickley Valley YMCA and the Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center.
The borough hosts a variety of activities, from its annual Light Up Night and Harvest Festival to multiple vendor opportunities and networking events from the Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce.
“I think it’s incredible,” Chamber Executive Director Erica Parr said. “Sewickley is such a unique and special community. There are a lot of other amazing, small and special communities in the Northeast. … We’re thrilled to be No. 1 and bumping up from No. 2 last year and excited to have more people come and visit and experience Sewickley.”
