State College — home to Penn State University — was named the best college town in America by USA Today readers.

Just over 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, the borough of about 41,000 residents stands out, readers say, for its blend of small-town feel and big-campus energy.

The report, part of the publication’s USA Today 10BEST feature, says the town, anchored by one of the nation’s largest public universities, offers a dense mix of bars, restaurants and coffee shops that cater to students and families.

“We don’t just have Happy Valley as a nickname for any old reason! We Are happy here!!! Come visit and see all that makes State College special,” said The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, the area’s tour center, in a social media post.

The area is known for its low crime rates and high employment rates post-graduation, factors that contribute significantly to its appeal, according to rankings by Forbes.

With Penn State at the heart of the town’s appeal, USA Today said it was distinguished by its rigorous academic environment and vibrant campus life. “It enrolls over 46,000 students at its main campus from all 50 states and more than 140 countries,” the article said.

Comments on USA Today’s Facebook post about the news were mixed.

“I went to Penn State for undergrad, but I’m a bit surprised by this study. I’d rather go to Bama than Penn State if I’d have to choose between my undergraduate and graduate schools. I imagine this study was primarily just a race between Penn State and Michigan due to student body size as it was done by readers,” one user wrote.

While others hyped up their alma mater.

“Absolutely beautiful and welcoming. Love this place!!,” one user wrote.

“WE ARE the best,” another said.
