Trib HSSN baseball player of the week – James “Booboo” Armstrong
School – Hopewell
Class – Sophomore

#Earned – You’ll forgive a 16-year old three-sport star if he is not familiar with baseball history from 51 years ago.
In September of 1975, former Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Rennie Stennett made major league history when he set the record for most hits in a nine-inning baseball game by going 7 for 7 in a victory over the host Chicago Cubs, 22-0.
Hopewell sophomore James “Booboo” Armstrong came close to matching that incredible record earlier this week.
In a Section 1-4A series opener at North Catholic, Armstrong went six for six with three runs scored and three RBIs.
In his historic game, Stennett had a double, triple and five singles. Unlike like the late, great Pirate, all six of Armstrong’s hits were singles.
The Vikings trailed at one point in the game, 6-3, but rallied to defeat the Trojans in a wild opener, 15-9.
It was all Hopewell in the rematch the next day against visiting North Catholic, as the Vikings won, 11-0.
Armstrong went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBIs in the victory. Both of his hits were doubles.
The impressive sweep over North Catholic improved Hopewell to 4-2 in the section where it is tied with Beaver and trailing front-running Blackhawk.
The 8 for 10 week with six RBIs and five runs scored was just another week at the office for the uber-talented Armstrong.
For the season, “Booboo” has opponents sobbing with a .552 batting average with 16 hits in 29 at-bats.
He has scored 12 runs and driven in nine runs and has four doubles.
Armstrong has a .618 on-base percentage and a .690 slugging percent for a OPS of 1.308.
All of this is coming off brilliant seasons in football and basketball.
On the gridiron in the fall, the Vikings quarterback connected on 125 of 209 passes for 2,217 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was second on the team in rushing and scoring with 739 yards on the ground and 17 touchdowns as Hopewell finished 6-4.
On the hardwood in the winter, the Vikings guard led the team in scoring by averaging 19.8 points per game as Hopewell ended up tied for second place in Section 2-4A and finished 14-8.
