Pittsburgh police officer bitten by dog during pursuit

A Pittsburgh police officer was bitten by a dog during a foot pursuit Saturday in the city’s Knoxville section. The dog was subsequently shot and killed, authorities said.

Officers were called at about 3:45 p.m. to the 100 block of Knox Avenue for a complaint. They encountered a man with an outstanding warrant who fled into the building when police arrived, according to public safety officials.

A dog that escaped from the apartment building attacked a detective, biting him on the arm and causing multiple puncture wounds. The detective was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

The suspect was apprehended and taken to Allegheny County Jail.


Overnight fire in Baldwin

No one was reported injured in an overnight fire in Baldwin, authorities said.

Crews were called at about 2 a.m. to the 400 block of Grace Street, where flames and smoke were shooting from the structure.

Allegheny County dispatchers said no one was transported from the scene.


Route 28 ramp closure

Motorists who travel Route 28 near Etna will encounter a temporary closure this week.

The left-hand off-ramp to northbound Route 8 in Etna will close Tuesday and Wednesday overnight, PennDOT officials said.

Crews will be replacing guardrails from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Ramp traffic be detoured. From northbound Route 28, motorists can travel past the ramp to the Highland Park Bridge and bear right toward Sharpsburg. From there, turn left onto Freeport Road and take the left turn onto the ramp for Route 28, bearing right for south Route 28 and then straight to the north Route 8 exit.
