Trib HSSN diamond team of the week – North Allegheny Tigers softball
Head coach – Bill Aguglia (second season)
Records – 3-5 overall, 3-4 in Class 6A
#Earned – If you are a fan of North Allegheny softball, the one thing you can bet on is that win or lose, you will be on the edge of your seat throughout.
Outside of one win and two losses that were one-sided, the Tigers have battled in some crazy close contests.
This past week was a prime example that the game is never over until the 21st out is made.
On Tuesday at Norwin, NA scored five runs in the second inning and added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to lead 8-5. However, an eight-run bottom of the fourth was the difference as the Knights won 15-8.
The script was flipped Wednesday at home against Pine-Richland.
Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the second, the Tigers scored five runs to take the lead. Then after the Rams went back on top in the fourth inning, North Allegheny exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning to take the lead and hold on for a much-needed 12-8 win.
The victory ended a two-game skid.
Finally on Friday, Canon-McMillan, which entered the week undefeated, visited NA.
Down 3-1, the Big Macs tied the game in the fifth inning, and then scored three more in the sixth to take the lead, 6-3.
The Tigers’ tale this day was dramatic and what they hope is a season-changing outcome.
North Allegheny scored four times in the bottom of the seventh inning to walk off with a big 7-6 win.
Standout performers – In the loss to Norwin on Wednesday, juniors Zoe Rychel and Taylor Condiotte combined to go 7 for 8.
Rychel was 4 for 5 at the plate with a double and two RBIs while Condiotte was 3 for 3 with two runs batted in.
The next day against Pine-Richland, senior Erin Fadgen had a double and drove in four runs.
Rychel was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and junior Leah Carlson also had two hits and had two runs batted in.
Finally, in the comeback thriller over Canon-McMillan, sophomore Brianna Mensch was 2 for 2 with a double and a home run while Fadgen doubled and had an RBI.
Junior Twila Goulding was 2 for 3 with a double and drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
