The Longvue Acres Garden Club will explore the topic of “Frugal Gardening: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” during its program at 7:45 p.m. April 28 at Northmont United Presbyterian Church, 8169 Perry Highway, McCandless.

Penn State Master Gardener Pat Morgan will discuss how to incorporate the three Rs into one’s gardening maintenance schedule to save money, time and be more ecologically friendly.

Programs are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month and are free and open to the public.

Helpers sought for roadside cleanup

McCandless is looking for volunteers to help with its annual community roadside cleanup on April 25.

Participants should meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Public Works building, 9955 Grubbs Road, for a brief welcome and assignments. All supplies, including gloves, bags, safety vests and snacks, will be provided.

The rain date will be May 9.

The cleanup is sponsored by the McCandless Environmental Advisory Committee.

McCandless Democratic Committee seeks scholarship applications

The McCandless Democratic Committee is seeking applicants for its 20th annual Peggy and Vince Amatangelo Scholarship.

The award will take place in June during the monthly McCandless Democratic Committee meeting. Several $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this year to deserving students.

Applicants must be in their senior year at North Allegheny High School, a registered Democrat and, if younger than 18, the child of a registered Democrat. Applicants also must be eligible to graduate and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Financial disclosures and SAT scores are not required.

Student musicians, singers to perform at Heinz Hall

Members of the Pittsburgh Youth Concert Orchestras will perform a free concert, PYCO Platinum, from 5 to 7 p.m. May 10 at Heinz Hall in Downtown Pittsburgh.

The concert, which takes place on Mother’s Day, will showcase the talents of more than 300 PYCO student musicians and Pittsburgh-area choirs and singers. The event will be emceed by Anna Singer of WQED Pittsburgh.

Young musicians from PYCO’s ensembles will perform a program of classical works, jazz selections and pops favorites. Highlights will include the “William Tell Overture” by Gioachino Rossini and “Symphony No. 6: Third Movement” by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The centerpiece of the concert will be excerpts from “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, performed by the PYCO Symphony Orchestras and a large festival chorus comprised of community choral groups as well as high school and children’s choirs.

The grand finale will feature the combined orchestra and choir performing “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen.

The concert is free and open to the public. No tickets or advance registration is required, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

A suggested donation of $15 per adult will support PYCO’s youth music education programs.

PYCO is looking for Pittsburgh-area businesses and organizations as sponsors of the event. Six sponsorship levels are available, from general sponsorship at $250 to presenting sponsorship at $2,500. Sponsorship forms can be submitted at pyco.org/heinz-hall-sponsors.html.

Founded in 2006, PYCO provides orchestral and jazz ensemble opportunities for string, woodwind, brass, percussion, piano and harp players ages 8 to 20. Help with heating bills available through May 8

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance program (LIHEAP) provides cash grants to help Pennsylvania families pay their heating bills.

Through May 8, low-income residents who need assistance paying for their heating bill can apply for a one-time grant of $200 to $1,000 that will be applied directly to their utility provider.

Funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

To qualify for LIHEAP in Pennsylvania, you must meet income requirements, which are set based on household size. Renters and homeowners are eligible for benefits. You do not need to be on another public assistance program or have unpaid heating bills to qualify.

If you are experiencing an emergency related to your household’s heat, such as broken equipment, or facing utility service termination, you might be eligible to receive additional funds through a crisis grant.

McCandless organizing first Bday 5K on July 4

McCandless is hosting its first-ever Bday 5K on July 4 at the North Park Boathouse, 10301 Pearce Mill Road.

Walkers, joggers and runners of all fitness levels are welcome to participate in this family-friendly race celebrating two birthdays — America’s 250th and McCandless’ 175th.

Purse Bash to benefit fire department

The Richland Volunteer Fire Department is hosting its annual Purse Bash fundraiser from 6 to 10 p.m. April 25 in the social hall, 5857 Meridian Road, Richland. Doors will open at 5 p.m.

The $50 donation to attend includes admission, 17 chances to win a designer purse on the main ticket, food and drinks.

The event is BYOB.

There also will be a 50-50, auction baskets and various raffles throughout the evening.

Free presentation to highlight life of Myron Cope

Seniors Helping Seniors Pittsburgh Northeast is hosting a presentation and book signing by “Behind the Yoi” co-author Dan Joseph at 2 p.m. April 17 in the Legacy Theater at Cumberland Woods Village, 700 Cumberland Drive, McCandless.

The event, held in conjunction with the Presbyterian Senior Care Network, is taking place just in time for Pittsburgh’s 2026 NFL Draft celebration.

Joseph, a Pittsburgh native, will discuss the 2024 biography of Myron Cope written with Cope’s daughter, Elizabeth. The book details the life and career of Cope, undoubtedly the most colorful voice in Pittsburgh broadcast history, as he built his legacy — first as a writer with magazines such as Sports Illustrated, then as a broadcaster with WTAE and the Steelers.

Joseph will share excerpts of Cope’s tapes, letters and photographs, which became the basis of the biography. Recorded highlights of Cope’s draft-day interviews and insights into the history of Cope’s creation, the Terrible Towel, will be shared.

AAUW organizing 6th author fundraiser

The North Hills affiliate of the American Association of University Women is hosting its sixth annual For the Love of Books fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 30 at La Roche University, 9000 Babcock Blvd., McCandless.

Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

The event will feature presentations by local authors followed by a panel discussion, book signings, vendors and raffle baskets.

Morning refreshments and a light, gluten-free and nut-free lunch will be served.

Seating is limited, and reservations are required by May 23.

The cost to attend is $45.

North Hills Chorale plans patriotic spring concert

County seeks lifeguards for parks

Allegheny County Parks is hiring lifeguards.

The county has four pool facilities: North Park swimming pool in McCandless and the wave pools in Boyce Park in Monroeville, South Park in Bethel Park and Settlers Cabin Park in Robinson.

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring safe swimming conditions in and around the pool areas, and creating a fun and positive atmosphere for all guests.

The pay is $16 to $18 per hour and successful candidates must satisfy the following criteria:

Ages 15 and older;

Complete all required lifeguard employment forms;

Possess a current lifeguard certification and be able to pass an aquatics test;

Work the entire swimming season, including flexible hours, weekends and holidays.

Successful candidates must successfully pass background checks as required for the position.

Safety course open to drivers 55 and older

Seniors for Safe Driving is offering an upcoming course for motorists 55 and older from 1 to 5 p.m. May 7 at the Baierl Family YMCA, 2565 Nicholson Road, Franklin Park.

The PennDOT-approved course is an opportunity for older motorists to refresh their driving skills and their knowledge of the rules of the road.

There is no testing or behind-the-wheel driving. Participants who complete the course can receive a three-year discount of no less that 5% on their auto insurance.

Course highlights include one’s health and driving performance; effects of medication and alcohol on driving; yielding and intersections; strategies for safe passing and managing one’s speed; keeping up with vehicle technology; preventive ways to reduce driver distractions;, proper use of safety belts, air bags and anti-lock brakes; defensive driving tactics and sharing the road; dealing with aggressive drivers and road rage situations; and the latest information on traffic laws and regulations.

The cost is $17.
