An inaugural 5K sponsored by Highlands Area Rotary will help fund scholarships to local high school seniors.

The Service Above Self footrace is scheduled for 8 a.m. May 16 in Brackenridge.

“We are hoping this becomes an annual event that we can grow year by year,” Rotary President Joe Lucchino said.

Money will support Rotary causes, which include scholarships to Highlands students and donations to local nonprofits.

Lucchino said his group is relying on the success of the 5K to help replace a longtime bingo which is no longer held.

The Rotary has been awarding scholarships since 1983.

The club is also involved in community events like the Alle-Kiski Choral Concert, which it hosts each fall to showcase students from school districts including Burrell, Freeport Area, Kiski Area and Allegheny Valley.

Organizers said the 5K seemed like a nice fit for the club and a good way to bring the community together.

The 3.1-mile flat course starts and ends at the Brackenridge Salvation Army. The route follows Morgan Street to First Avenue, crosses into Tarentum to the marina and loops back to the finish line. There will also be a kids’ 1-mile fun run.

Brackenridge Council approved the road closures during its meeting April 2.

The race is stroller- and pet-friendly.

The cost is $30 for the 5K and $15 for the 1-miler. Post-race refreshments will be served.

Participants who register by April 27 are guaranteed a shirt.
