Aleesha Kelly of Vandergrift likes things that are mysterious.
She harnesses that curiosity for the different and unknown through curating immersive, themed events under her business Mystic Market, a Magickal Menagerie.
She has helped organize events like the Vandergrift Artsfest and the Witching Hours Night Market.
Now, she has turned her attention to Monroeville for an upcoming renaissance-themed festival that will meld many of the creative motifs she has included in previous endeavors.
“This one’s a combination of everything I’ve been working on,” Kelly said. “We’ve been doing different fantasy themes and mystical themes.”
The Medieval Magick Faire will be held Saturday, April 18 at the All-American Fieldhouse.
The story-driven event will have wandering performers dressed as the faire king, queen, knights, wizards and jesters, Kelly said.
There also will be live armor and sword fighting demonstrations by the Pittsburgh Fighters Guild and “fight-a-friend” activities where guests can duel with foam swords.
Dozens of vendors, including jewelers, apothecaries and crystal shops, will fill the indoor event space. Concessions also will be available.
Kelly said that events like the Magick Faire build community and help small businesses and performers.
Immersive experiences help to encourage expression, inclusivity and connection while drawing a crowd that might not frequent typical vendor shows, she said.
“Sometimes you want to live in a pretend world, but you want it to be a little real,” Kelly said. “We’re all online now and that need for being with other people is there. But if you can dress up in cosplay and go somewhere, for a lot of people, that makes it easier.”
Costumes are encouraged for Saturday’s event.
Often, Kelly’s event inspiration will come from an interest to learn more about a topic, and the Magick Faire is no different, she said.
“I build around what I want to do at the time, (what) I really want to learn more about,” she said.
