After a stormy period in early April that saw the vast majority of Pitt’s roster hit the transfer portal, of late, it’s been nothing but good news for the Panthers.

The past few days have illustrated that the transfer portal works both ways, and on Monday night, Pitt got its eighth commitment of the spring in the form of Charleston Southern shooting guard A’lahn Sumler.

Sumler, a 6-foot-4 specimen who will be a senior, announced his commitment on Instagram.

He follows Georgia Tech big man Baye NDongo, forward Dominique Diomande (BYU/Washington) and guards Naithan George (Syracuse/Georgia Tech), Jonathan Powell (North Carolina/West Virginia), Jalil Bethea (Alamaba/Miami) and Colin Hawkins (Gardner-Webb).

This past season at Charleston Southern of the Big South Conference, Sumler played in 28 games, starting 18, while setting career-highs in most major statistical categories, including points (18.9), assists (3.8) and rebounds (4.8) per contest.

Sumler’s points per game led the Big South, he ranked second in the league with a 40% 3-point rate and he was a first-team all-conference selection last season.

The Waterbury, Conn., native played high school basketball in Buford, Ga., and began his collegiate career at Northern Kentucky in 2022-23, but was used sparingly, averaging only 10.1 minutes per game in a bench role.

The following season, he transferred to Charleston Southern, where he dramatically boosted his numbers, as over 29 games (21 starts), he averaged 14.2 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Sumler then missed the 2024-25 season entirely due to injury.

With the additions of Sumler, NDongo, Diomande, George, Powell, Bethea and Hawkins, Pitt’s new-look roster for 2026-27 is increasingly taking shape.

They replace the likes of Roman Siulepa, Brandin Cummings, Nojus Indrusaitis, Omari Witherspoon, Kieran Mullen and Papa Amadou Kante, who transferred.

The only scholarship player Pitt retained from last season who saw any game action is guard Macari Moore.
