A Liberty Borough man was arrested this week after fighting with a police officer and attempting to steal the officer’s weapon, according to Allegheny County Police.
Matthew Bertges, 28, is facing numerous charges, including aggravated assault, strangulation, robbery, disarming a law enforcement officer, possession of criminal instruments and evading arrest on foot, according to court documents.
County detectives were dispatched to the 3000 block of Liberty Way on Sunday for reports of a physical domestic dispute between Bertges and a woman, according to the arrest papers in support of the charges.
The woman told police the couple went to a bar in Pittsburgh’s West End neighborhood for a few hours on Sunday before returning to Liberty Way. She told police Bertges began lashing out.
She detailed a physical attack that included choking and caused her fall.
The woman told police she ran to another nearby home.
. She also told police Bertges broke the back window and door jamb of her vehicle, as well as her phone.
Police say Bertges fled the scene in his vehicle, crashing in the front yard of a residence about 2 miles away on Calhoun Road in Elizabeth. His vehicle sustained significant damage,.
Police interviewed a resident of that home He told police he was inside with his family when he heard what sounded like thunder.
He went outside and saw that two of his cars and an unknown vehicle had caught fire in his front yard.
Police later determined the unknown vehicle belonged to Bertges, who had fled the scene.
The resident called 911 to report the fire and used a fire extinguisher to prevent the flames from spreading to his home. Two of his lawn tractors and a push mower also were damaged by the fire.
County police tracked Bertges’ cellphone and found him along Liberty Way, near his home. While officers were placing Bertges in handcuffs, he began to resist arrest, according to his arrest papers.
An officer wrestled Bertges to the ground, and Bertges grabbed the officer’s gun.
The officer commanded Bertges to drop the weapon, later striking Bertges’ face.
Bertges then used the left handcuff to strike the officer’s face, the affidavit says.
Bertges stood up, prompting the officer to discharge his Taser multiple times, to no effect.
Bertges struck the officer with the handcuffs and ran. He then ran back toward the officer and attempted to kick him, according to the affidavit.
The officer wrestled Bertges to the ground again and another officer helped hold him down until additional police arrived.
McKeesport police took Bertges to UPMC McKeesport hospital for treatment of his injuries.
He was later flown to UPMC Presbyterian via helicopter in critical condition. Doctors told police Monday Bertges was no longer critical.
Toxicology screenings detected opiates, marijuana and alcohol in Bertges’ bloodstream.
Bertges is being held in Allegheny County Jail. A preliminary hearing has yet to be scheduled.
