Four Class 6A baseball section series are set to conclude Thursday.
Norwin has had an interesting section season thus far.
The Knights swept rival Hempfield, winning all three games by a combined five runs.
Then last week, the Knights were swept by front running Canon-McMillan in Section 2-6A after being outscored by the Big Macs, 20-3.
Now Norwin is looking to win three straight again, this time from Woodland Hills.
In victories Monday and Tuesday, the Knights hammered the Wolverines by scores of 12-0 and 12-2.
Norwin visits Woodland Hills at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Another team on a roll this week is Seneca Valley, which looks to continue to climb up the Section 1-6A standings when it hosts North Hills at 6:30 p.m.
The Raiders will have broom in hand as they look to sweep the Indians after outscoring the tribe in the first two games by a combined 17-2.
Central Catholic began the week in first place in Section 1-6A; however, now the Vikings need a win Thursday over North Allegheny to salvage one game in the series. First pitch is at 3:45 p.m.
The Tigers beat the Vikings on Monday, 6-1, then won a nail-biter on Wednesday, 8-7.
The only 6A series that does not enter Thursday’s action in sweep-mode has Canon-McMillan hosting Mt. Lebanon at 4 p.m.
The Big Macs lost their first section game Monday to the Blue Devils, then won on Wednesday, 3-2.
Rally in the Valley
Reigning WPIAL and PIAA Class 4A baseball champion Indiana (8-1, 6-0) is all alone in first place in Section 3 after sweeping Greensburg Salem this week.
Sole possession of second place will be determined Thursday when Knoch visits Valley in the makeup of a game suspended Tuesday.
In the first game of this section series Monday, the Vikings handed the Knights their first section loss, 6-1.
Nikolas Heakins went 3 for 4 with a homer as Valley improved to 4-1 in the section and 9-2 overall.
Knoch fell to 2-1 in section play and 9-3 this season.
The winner takes over second place and the loser falls to third place with both eying up a series with the Little Indians.
Indiana squares off with Knoch next week and Valley the following week.
1-2 punch for section supremacy
We found out last week that the Neshannock softball team is mortal after all following two perfect seasons and a record win streak.
Now how will the Lancers fare in their quest for another section crown against the two teams they are tied or just ahead of in Section 1-2A?
On Thursday, Neshannock (7-1, 5-1) visits Laurel (5-1, 4-1) at 5 p.m.
Then on Friday, the Lancers host Shenango (9-2, 5-2) at 5:30 p.m.
It was the Wildcats who ended the Neshannock win streak with a comeback victory at home, 6-5.
Titanic challenge
Even though Aquinas Academy is not ranked in the latest boys volleyball coaches poll, it is the closest team to top-ranked Shaler in the Section 1-2A standings.
On Thursday, the Crusaders have the tough challenge of traveling to Shaler to battle the first-place Titans.
Aquinas Academy is 2-1 in the section and 2-2 this season.
Shaler sits at 4-0 in section play and 5-1 overall.
Last month, the Titans beat the Crusaders on the road, 3-0.
