Hempfield senior Chesnee Smith was a double individual winner at the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational on April 11.

She won the 1,600- and 800-meter runs and set a meet record in winning the 800 in 2:13.89. She also had a personal record in the 1,600 (5:10.58).

Smith then ran the 400 on Tuesday at Penn-Trafford and missed breaking Jen Maline’s record by a half-second.

Hempfield coach Ron Colland said it was the first time Smith ran the open 400. It is currently one of the top times (57 seconds) in the WPIAL. Her 800 time is No. 1.

Hempfield will play host to Norwin on Tuesday in a first-place showdown.

MVP honors

Hempfield junior Madison Altman and senior Jonathan Stetchock claimed running MVP honors at the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational.

Altman won the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and anchored the winning 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Stetchock won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs and anchored the winning 3,200-meter relay team.

Kiski Area sophomore Alaysia Bell won the girls field MVP. She won the triple jump and placed third in the long jump.

Franklin Regional junior Sean Cartwright won the combined MVP. He won the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. He placed third in the 300 hurdles.

Belle Vernon senior Ryan Kent was the boys field MVP. He won the discus was a personal record of 174 feet, 4 inches.

He placed second in the javelin and shot put.

Top marks

Latrobe junior Preston Miller has the top time in the WPIAL in Class 3A in the 100-meter dash at 10.63 seconds.

Plum senior Owen Proskin has the top high jump of 6 feet, 10 inches, while Belle Vernon senior Ryan Kent has the best throw in the discus of 174-4.

Connellsville senior Glen Strickler leads the way in the shot put with a toss of 57-4.

Smith has the top time in the girls 800 at 2:13.89. Altman has the top time in the 100 hurdles and Hempfield senior Maddie Tulley has the best toss in the discus of 131-1.

Norwin junior Gabrielle Watson is No. 1 in the long jump with a leap of 18-1, while Franklin Regional junior Jamie Kociela has hit 5-7 to lead the high jump.

Some of the top performances in Class 2A include Geibel Catholic senior Emma Larkin in the 300 hurdles (46.34), the Apollo-Ridge girls 1,600-meter relay team and Freeport junior Mackenzie Magess in the pole vault (12-6).

Greensburg Central Catholic senior Jerry Davis, the returning PIAA champion, has run a 49.31 in the 400. Fellow GCC senior Grant Brewer has the top 300 hurdle time of 41.03.

Big weekend

There are two big invitationals this weekend:

• The Slippery Rock Invitational is Friday beginning at 1 p.m. There are more than 65 schools competing, headlined by Hempfield, Kiski Area, Canon-McMillan and Quaker Valley.

• The 61st Butler Invitational will be Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. More than 80 schools will participate, headlined by Norwin, North Allegheny, Mt. Lebanon and Butler.

County meet Thursday

The oldest county track and field meet in the state, the 103rd Westmoreland County Coaches’ Association meet, is Thursday at Mt. Pleasant. Action begins 12:30 p.m.

The rain day, if needed, is Saturday.
