Trib HSSN baseball player of the week – Cody Bungert
School – South Fayette
Class – Senior
Position – Catcher
#Earned – South Fayette won a WPIAL baseball championship eight years ago and finished first or second in its section every year this decade with the exception of the 2025 campaign.
A year ago, the Lions finished in fifth place in Section 2-5A with a 5-7 section record and an overall mark of 9-9.
Longtime South Fayette assistant coach Marc “Bubba” Snider took over for Ken Morgan this offseason and now the Lions are back in the hunt for a section crown.
Following a section sweep this past week of Upper St. Clair, South Fayette is alone in first place with a 6-2 section record with two section series remaining against Trinity and Peters Township.
One of the catalysts for the Lions’ success this season and especially this past week is senior catcher Cody Bungert.
On Monday in the series opener at Boyce-Mayview in Upper St. Clair, Bungert was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and four RBIs as the Lions cruised to 17-6 victory.
The second game was played over two days due to heavy rains through the area suspending play Tuesday.
When the game finished Wednesday, Bungert was 2 for 4 with another double and triple and this time ending up with three RBI as the Lions clawed out another win over the Panthers, 7-6.
For the season, Bungert is batting .364 with a home run and 11 RBIs. He also has five doubles and two triples, both coming this past week.
The senior catcher has a .540 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.176.
Cody has played baseball since he started in T-ball. He also played basketball when he was young up until middle school, and he played football until he reached high school.
Bungert was a fourth grader when South Fayette defeated Ringgold, 4-1, to capture the 2018 WPIAL Class 4A baseball championship.
He’d love to bring gold back to the green and while before he graduates next month.
Bungert plans to continue his academic and baseball career at Patrick Henry Community College in Purcellville, Va., 40 miles north of Washington D.C.
