Volunteers and visitors are welcome Saturday afternoon for a series of environmental activities at Westmoreland Land Trust’s Saint Xavier Nature Reserve in Unity.

Tree planting and clearing trash along a section of Route 30 are scheduled along with a series of awareness programs set from noon to 3 p.m.

The free activities tied to Earth Day at 106 Saint Xavier Road, will include planting trees at 1 p.m. with the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in the lower preserve. A one-mile guided nature walk also is planned. Cleaning up litter along the eastbound side of Route 30 along the Nature Preserve property is planned for 2 p.m.

Among other activities planned at the 350-acre preserve are a nature bingo scavenger hunt, fishing instruction, a soil exploration table for children, planting vegetable seeds, painting rocks, a story walk in the Grove and live biodegradability and sustainability demonstrations. A food truck will be on the site.

The Land Trust is holding the free event for the public in partnership with Seton Hill University students and community partners.

The event is an opportunity to bring people together around a shared appreciation for local land and the importance of protecting it,” said Leanna Bird, Land Trust executive director.

Nicole McAllister Conrad, biology assistant professor at Seton Hill, said he goal is to bring the community together to celebrate the nature around us.
