Kendal Pistella, a Westmoreland County martial arts student from Whitaker, earned a gold medal at a point-sparring national competition.

Pistella, who trains under John Morgart Jr. at Wei Son Do Martial Arts in North Huntingdon, bested the field at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio, last month.

It is one of the nation’s largest multi-sport events, drawing more than 20,000 athletes and more than 100,000 spectators annually.

Competing in her first major martial arts tournament, Pistella, a green belt, advanced through multiple rounds in a point-sparring, single-elimination division, ultimately defeating a black belt opponent in the later stages of her bracket. The division featured competitors from multiple states and required consecutive wins, with no second-chance bracket.

The match was decided through controlled scoring and timing rather than a single decisive exchange. Pistelal adjusted during active competition, disrupting rhythm and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

“Rank doesn’t determine performance — execution under pressure does,” Morgart said. “If a technique fails when timing breaks down, it has to be reexamined.”

Kendal’s sister, Melissa, has recorded multiple podium finishes across divisions, including sparring, breaking and self-defense, along with placements in forms. She has also earned titles at regional competitions and placements at events connected to the Arnold Sports Festival, including the Arnold Battle of Columbus.
