It was quite a day for Franklin Regional junior Sean Cartwright at the Lady Spartan/Wildcat Invitational on April 11.

Cartwright earned MVP honors for winning the 110-meter hurdles and the high jump. He also placed third in the 300 hurdles.

He was not the only Panthers athlete to perform well. Senior Maria Piraino won the javelin, and junior Jamie Kociela won the high jump. She has the top jump in the WPIAL at 5-foot, 7-inches.

“Sean is having an incredible year,” Franklin Regional coach Bob Ralston said. “He has been outstanding in the high jump and both hurdles. We could use him in a lot of events if we could.”

Cartwright won the high jump with a leap of 6-5. He has cleared 6-7 this season.

“I have practiced hard for my events,” Cartwright said. “I happy with 6-5 in the high jump, but 6-7 would have been nice.

“I had a personal record in the hurdles. I was proud of my effort.”

Franklin Regional finished second to Hempfield in both team races. The Spartans edged the Panthers, 75-72, in the boys’ standings. The Lady Spartans won with 147 points, while the Panthers had 64.

“We felt we were going to win the boys title,” Ralston said. “We had a good effort.”

Cartwright’s twin brother Ethan placed sixth in the 110 hurdles and fourth 300 hurdles. Senior Loch Bresnahan finished second in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

“Every time Ethan races he is getting a personal record,” Ralston said. “Sean and Ethan are always competing to get better; Loch (Bresnahan) keeps getting faster.”

Others from Franklin Regional’s boys team to earn medals were junior Gage Williams (sixth, 200), Andrew Silvis (fourth, 400), sophomore Khai Sheetz (fifth, 400), sophomore Nico Piraino (sixth, 800), senior Mason Gray (sixth, 1,600) and senior Jaymeir Austin (fifth high jump).

Other FR girls to place were senior junior Madeline Slotterback (fifth, 200, personal record), junior A.J. Irvin (fifth, 400), senior Skylar Duchamp (fifth, 3,200), junior Jaiden Tysarczyk (fourth, long jump, and second, triple jump), senior Arden Tomley (second, pole vault)

“We were really pleased how things have worked out,” Ralston said. “We have some relays coming together.”

The 1,600-meter girls’ team consists of Kate Silvis, Gabby Collier, Slotterback and A.J. Irvin.

Both teams are playoff bound. The boys finished second to Plum in Section 5-3A while the girls won Section 5-3A.

“The goal every year is to qualify for the playoffs and win the section,” Ralston said. “The other goal is to get as many athletes as possible to Shippensburg for the PIAA meet.”

And numerous records have been broken this season.

“We have broken four school records,” Ralston said. “Maria broke hers in the javelin, Jamie in the high jump and Sean (high jump and 110 hurdles) has broken two 50-year-old marks.”
