Trib HSSN diamond team of the week – Thomas Jefferson Jaguars baseball
Coach – Tim Vickers (eighth season)
Records – Thomas Jefferson is 5-1 and tied for first place with Baldwin in Section 4-5A. The Jaguars are 9-3 overall this season.
#Earned – You could say the Thomas Jefferson baseball team had a sixth sense in its showdown series last week against Montour.
TJ began the week with a four-game winning streak and tied for second place with Baldwin, one game behind front- running Montour in Section 4-5A.
Now as a new week is about to begin, the Jaguars are tied for first place with the Highlanders following a big section sweep of the Spartans last week.
On Monday night under the lights at Burkett Field in Robinson Township, pitching and defense ruled the day for visiting TJ.
The two Class 5A powers were locked in a scoreless tie through five innings before Thomas Jefferson erupted for five runs in the top of the sixth, and then finished the shutout to win 5-0.
With Baldwin defeating Gateway the same day, this forced a three-way tie for first place.
Game 2 of the series began Tuesday and the contest was suspended after four innings because of heavy rains sweeping through the area.
The game concluded Wednesday with the Jaguars sweeping past the Spartans.
Again, it was a big sixth inning that proved to be the difference for the Jags in this battle of black and gold.
Trailing 1-0, Thomas Jefferson plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth, which proved to be the difference in the 4-1 win over Montour.
Thomas Jefferson has two section series remaining, facing Gateway this week and McKeesport the following week.
Standout performers – The Thomas Jefferson pitching limited a Montour offense, which came into the series averaging over six runs a game, to only one run for the series.
Senior Colin Pearson threw five scoreless innings to pick up the win Monday. Sophomore Noah Sear tossed the final two innings to close out the shutout.
In the second game Tuesday, TJ senior Dom Metz started and was relieved by Sear until the rains came. On Wednesday, freshman Cameron Kear pitched the final three innings to pick up the victory in the comeback win for the Jaguars.
On offense for Thomas Jefferson, junior Eli Graff delivered the big hit with a two-run double in the sixth inning in the Monday triumph.
On Wednesday, senior Andy Brnusak and freshman Calvin Caterino each had run-scoring doubles for the Jaguars.
