Trib HSSN softball player of the week – Sydney Sekely
School – South Park
Class – Senior
Position – Pitcher
#Earned – The circle of life has gone full circle in the circle for one of the top pitchers in the WPIAL.
Sydney Sekely began her South Park softball career with a splash in the spring of 2023, finishing among the leaders in the district with 137 strikeouts in leading the Eagles to a second-place finish and an 11-6 record. This came after the program won only three games the previous year.
Since then, South Park has yet to lose a section game, going a combined 39-5 in 2024 and 2025 and finishing as the WPIAL Class 3A runner-up each season.
In her encore performance, Sekely is shining as a senior both at the plate and in the circle and has the Eagles soaring high at 11-0 for the season and 8-0 and in first place in Section 3-3A.
This past Monday, Sekely was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI as South Park blanked third-place Keystone Oaks, 8-0. In the circle, she allowed three hits and two walks while striking out 11.
Two days later, she no-hit Steel Valley with one walk and 12 strikeouts in only five innings in a 10-0 whitewash.
At the plate, Sekely was 2 for 4 with another double.
Finally, in a Friday battle for first place against visiting McGuffey, Sekely had two more hits at the plate and another shutout in the circle, holding the Highlanders to four hits with no walks and 12 strikeouts.
The successful week improved the Eagles’ lead in the section to two games over McGuffey and three games over Keystone Oaks with only two games left.
That guarantees South Park a third straight section crown.
But the Eagles have bigger fish to fry as Sekely and her fellow seniors would love nothing better than to wash away three straight WPIAL playoff losses to Mohawk, one in the first round and the last two years in the district finals.
Currently in the Trib HSSN district softball rankings, Mohawk is No. 1 in Class 3A with South Park at No. 2.
For the season, Sekely is batting .500 (17 for 34) with three doubles, three triples, nine RBIs and 10 runs scored.
She has a .514 on-base percentage, a .765 slugging percentage and a OPS of 1.279.
Pitching-wise, she is 9-0 with seven walks and 114 strikeouts. In 56 innings pitched, Sekely has allowed only 13 hits and has an ERA of 0.00.
She plans to continue her softball career this fall at Gannon.
