After a busy weekend, we wrap up a lot of what’s going on in Monday’s “First Call.” Broderick Jones might be dealing with a neck setback. Art Rooney II spoke about the prospect of drafting a quarterback.

We also discuss the crowded National League Central, check in on a former Pirates pitcher, and analyze some moves in the transfer portal that are impacting Robert Morris and Duquesne.

Nagging neck

Broderick Jones has had a setback in his recovery from his neck injury. That’s according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

He claimed on Monday morning that Jones “is scheduled to be examined this week to determine whether he will be ready for training camp and/or the start of the season, per league sources. That could influence whether Pittsburgh needs to find a new left tackle during the first two days of the draft.”

As recently as March 30, Steelers general manager Omar Khan was speaking positively about Jones’ recovery from the injury suffered last year.

How do the Steelers react? As of now, the organization still has Dylan Cook as a potential starter at left tackle. He was a pleasant surprise, starting in four regular-season games and the playoff loss to Houston.

The club has frequently been linked to Spencer Fano out of Utah as a draft prospect. He is the fourth-rated player at the position on ESPN.com’s board, and the 19th overall. The Steelers draft at No. 21 in the first round.

QB or not QB

Maybe that’s no longer the question.

Art Rooney II went on the air with WTAE’s Andrew Stockey on Friday and told him that he doesn’t think that the Steelers will be drafting a quarterback in the first round.

“I think I can tell you one thing, it’s probably not going to be a quarterback,” Rooney told Stockey. “But beyond that, it’s wide open. Of course, it depends on what happens in front of us. But, you know, I think it’ll be exciting to build. Interesting. A lot of interesting players in this draft. We have 12 selections in this draft. So we have an opportunity to really add some talent to the roster.”

Perhaps that’s an indication that the Steelers have increasing confidence that Aaron Rodgers will be signed before draft day, or shortly thereafter. It also may tip their hand about a lack of interest in Ty Simpson. The Alabama product is widely regarded as the only other QB who might be a first-round pick besides presumptive No. 1 selection, Fernando Mendoza.

But on Monday morning Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said there has been no update from Rodgers about signing a new contract.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network echoed Rapoport’s comments in a corresponding story and said Will Howard will Monday’s workout as QB1.

Crowded at the top

Every team in the National League Central is .500 or better. All five teams are at least three games over.

The Pirates (13-9) are a game back of the Reds (14-8) atop the division. The St. Louis Cardinals are in between, jammed in second place, a half game back at 13-8.

The Cards got a 7-5 extra-inning win in Houston on Sunday. Masyn Winn cleared the bases with a double down the third base line in the top of the 10th inning.

That’s five straight wins for the Cardinals. Astros starter Mike Burrows, who was acquired in December from the Pirates, was on the mound. He struck out a season-high seven and retired the first 14 batters he faced.

But the next five reached base. He was pulled before finishing the fifth inning, allowing four runs. He is now 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA.

Portal pivoting

Former Robert Morris men’s basketball player DeSean Goode has a new place to play. He’s heading to Miami.

Goode was the Horizon League Player of the Year. The sophomore averaged 15.2 points and 8.7 rebounds last year with the Colonials. He was previously at IU Indy in 2024-25.

At Duquesne, West Georgia transfer Josh Smith has reportedly committed to the Dukes. The 6-foot-3 guard played one season at West Georgia after starting at NC Central. The Chicago native averaged 16.2 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game this season.

Also over the weekend, according to CBS’ John Rothstein, Virginia Tech transfer Izaiah Pasha committed to Duquesne.
