Seven nonsection matches Monday evening kick off this week’s WPIAL boys volleyball schedule, and key section contests follow Tuesday on the road to the WPIAL playoffs.

Several teams in Class 3A and Class 2A made statements last week, and their accomplishments are reflected in this week’s Western Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association rankings released Monday morning.

North Allegheny maintained its top spot in Class 3A with 3-0 wins last week over Section 3 rivals in No. 4 Pine-Richland and No. 3 Seneca Valley and an additional 3-0 victory over No. 8 Penn-Trafford.

Butler edged Seneca Valley, 3-2, in section play, and bumped up one spot past the Raiders to No. 2.

The rest of the Class 3A top 10 has Baldwin at No. 5, Mt. Lebanon at No. 6, Hempfield at No. 7, Upper St. Clair at No. 9 and Norwin at No. 10.

It was status quo in Class 2A from Shaler at the top through Trinity at No. 7.

Seton LaSalle (No. 2), South Fayette (No. 3), Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (No. 4), Thomas Jefferson (No. 5) and Derry (No. 6) also held their position from the week prior.

Hopewell topped No. 10 Montour, 3-1, in Section 4, added victories over North Catholic and Beaver County Christian this past week, and bumped up two spots to No. 8.

Deer Lakes remains at No. 9 in this week’s rankings.

Each week throughout the season, all 45 boys volleyball head coaches will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the top-10 rankings and also nominate players for each classification’s players of the week.
