Anyone interested in getting their hands dirty can volunteer Saturday at the Greg Blythe Friendship Garden in Tarentum.

Crews will gather from 10 a.m. to noon to pull weeds and plant spring crops. There’s also flowers to plant and mulch to spread.

The site along First Avenue, next to Dreshar Stadium, grows a variety of fruits and veggies that are available to the public.

Beans, kale, strawberries, peppers and more are free to people through a “pick your own” model.

The garden, in its 11th year, is planned, maintained and planted by volunteers.

A post by garden officials said “the warmer weather has told the weeds grow big and strong! We don’t need the weeds. We also need to get spring veggies into the ground ASAP.”

The garden is named in memory of one of the founders, the late Pastor Greg Blythe, from Abundant Joy Fellowship, also on First Avenue. It has received support through the years from nonprofit Grow Pittsburgh by way of expertise and grants to purchase raised beds, seeds and soil. The garden boasts more than two dozen planting areas.

Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and tools, if possible, for the prep day.
