A new coastal seafood restaurant is coming to Downtown Pittsburgh.

Meredith Boyle and Fernando Navas, owners of the Argentine eatery Balvanera in the Strip District, will open another concept, Casa Anchoa. Set to launch this fall, the restaurant will take over the space formerly occupied by Nine on Nine at the corner of Ninth Street and Penn Avenue (900 Penn Ave).

Casa Anchoa’s future 3,651-square-foot space has been unoccupied since fine dining restaurant Nine on Nine closed in 2019, according to a news release from Legacy Realty Partners, who represented Navas and Boyle in the property transaction.

“The opening of yet another first-class restaurant option in Downtown Pittsburgh, specifically (in) the Cultural District, only solidifies our stance about Pittsburgh: it is thriving!” Herky Pollock, Legacy Realty Partners president and CEO, said in a news release.

The restaurant also sits steps away from Arts Landing, the four-acre outdoor civic space unveiled on Friday ahead of the NFL Draft. Casa Anchoa will join another Argentinian spot, Gaucho, in the Cultural District, along with Barcelona Wine Bar, a Spanish-inspired tapas bar, Bakersfield, Sienna Mercato, Nicky’s Thai, The Eagle and Whisper, a wine and dessert bar opened a year ago.

Navas and Boyle, a husband-and-wife team, brought Balvanera to Pittsburgh’s Strip District in 2023. The location was the restaurant’s second after the couple established it in New York City 10 years prior. Boyle grew up in Aspinwall, while her husband, Chef Fernando Navas, was born and raised in the coastal city of Punta Alta, Argentina. In 2021, Navas was recognized as an official food and wine ambassador for Argentina.
