Wednesday marks another busy day on the district softball schedule, including a battle for first place in Section 3-4A.
In Section 3-4A, North Catholic is in chase mode, one game behind Blackhawk as the two prepare to square off for the first time this season at the Blackhawk Intermediate School softball field at 4 p.m.
The Trojans are 6-1 in section play and 7-2 overall with victories in seven of their last eight games.
The Cougars are a perfect 7-0 in the section and 7-1 for the season with a three-game winning streak.
Both teams have clinched a playoff berth and are multiple games ahead of third-place Hampton (6-3) and Beaver (4-3).
The teams will meet again May 5 in Cranberry.
First place or at least a share of it is up for grabs in Section 1-2A softball when Laurel hosts Riverside.
The Spartans are 8-2 in the section and 9-2 for the season having seen an eight-game winning streak snapped on Monday by Shenango.
The Panthers are 6-2 in the section and overall with several games to be made up. They have won five games in a row.
Reigning champion Neshannock is 6-2 in section play and is at home to New Brighton (2-8) on Wednesday while Shenango is 8-3 and not in action.
Laurel is trying to keep its section title hopes alive as it hosts Neshannock on Friday.
Fighting for fourth
The top four teams in each section qualify for the upcoming WPIAL softball playoffs.
Fourth place and a possible playoff berth is up for grabs Wednesday when Moon is home to Upper St. Clair in a Section 3-5A battle at 4 p.m.
The Tigers are 4-5 in the section and 6-8 this season while the Panthers are 3-5 in the section and 5-7 overall.
These two met in the South Hills last Thursday with Moon edging Upper St. Clair, 4-3.
Also in Class 5A, fourth place in Section 4 is at stake when Peters Township travels to Connellsville at 4 p.m.
The Indians conclude their section schedule as they sit as 4-7 in the section and 5-9 overall.
The Falcons are 4-6 in section play and 8-6 overall.
In the first meeting, Connellsville cruised past Peters Township three weeks ago, 10-3.
Midweek lax showdown
Two old rivals collide Wednesday to determine first place in WPIAL girls lacrosse Section 1-3A.
Reigning district champion Mt. Lebanon hosts arch rival Upper St. Clair at 7:30 p.m.
The Blue Devils are undefeated, 7-0 in the section and 10-0 for the season.
The Panthers are 6-0 in section play and 8-1 overall.
The last time these teams met was in the 2025 WPIAL 3A semifinals when Mt. Lebanon defeated Upper St. Clair, 12-9.
Double the championships
The 2026 WPIAL boys doubles tennis championship and consolation finals are set for Wednesday at North Allegheny at 1 p.m.
In the Class 3A championship finals, the top two seeds square off as No. 1 Ashwin Sudhaker and Matt Kampi of North Allegheny battle No. 2 Luca Ritovoi and Noah Klaber of Mt. Lebanon.
In the 3A consolation match, No. 4 Logan Memije and Troy Boden of Gateway take on No. 6 Carter Lichtman and Myles Owens of Upper St. Clair.
The 2025 WPIAL 2A champion duo is back in the finals looking to repeat as No. Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing of South Park square off against No. 2 Ravi Stanger and Soham Maiti of Winchester Thurston.
The 2A consolation match pits No. 3 Sean Perez and Aiden Desanzo of Beaver face No. 5 Cody Clayton and Hunter Hazlewood of Central Valley.
