The top seeds in the WPIAL boys tennis doubles championships showed their mettle in the finals Wednesday, with North Allegheny’s Ashwin Sudhakar and Matt Kampi winning the Class 3A title and South Park’s Jonah Jasek and Steven Duing repeating as Class 2A champs.
Jasek and Duing defeated Winchester Thurston’s Ravi Stanger and Soham Maiti, 6-2, 6-4, to cap off a dominant tournament.
Jasek and Duing lost a total of six games in the first two rounds and won in the semifinals and finals in straight sets.
They’re the first Class 2A team to repeat as champs since Sewickley Academy’s Don and Ryan Gex in 2015-16. In Class 3A, Gateway’s Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memije won the last two years.
Sudhakar and Kampi were just as impressive, defeating Mt. Lebanon’s Luca Ritivoi and Noah Klaber in the finals, 6-4, 6-1.
Sudhakar and Kampi lost a total of four games in the first two rounds, then won their final two matches in straight sets.
Central Valley’s Cody Clayton and Hunter Hazelwood defeated Beaver’s Sean Perez and Aiden Desanzo, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in the Class 2A third-place match. The top three teams in 2A advance to states.
Gateway’s Logan Memije and Troy Boden defeated Upper St. Clair’s Carter Lichtman and Myles Owens by injury default in the Class 3A third-place match. Only the WPIAL finalists advance into the PIAA bracket in 3A.
